Xbox one controller not recognized by Windows 7

Recently I built myself a brand new gaming PC. I got a bunch of games off of steam and got an Xbox one controller to play them with. I downloaded the drivers for my PC and my Xbox controller but when I plug it in the controller isn't recognized by the system. My system acts as if there is nothing in the USB port. I have contacted Xbox and they could not do anything. Before I contact Microsoft I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix a problem like this.

Do other usb things run in that plug?

I wrote more until I realized you were talking about the Xbox one controller and I don't know about that one. The 360 comes in PC format and is pretty plug n play. One . . . I don't know. Google certainly seems to imply there's more to it.

Try plugging it into another USB-port.
Go to Control Panels, Hardware and Sound, and click on "Device Manager", do you see it listed there as anything? For example "Xbox Controller" or "Unknown Device" if yes, try uninstalling it and reinstalling the Xbox drivers from Microsofts site and try using Xinput or MotionJoy Offline version from the net.
If these don't work, check if your controller is working, maybe that's the problem or the cord.

So I plugged it in to this different 6 inch cord and the controller worked. My real question now is why one worked and the other didn't. Are there 2 different types of micro-USB cables? The cable that didn't work had notches cut out inside of the side that went in the Xbox one controller, the one that worked didn't have those notches. I know I'm not explaining this well but an explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever fully figure this out? I'm having an issue getting the NEW Xbox One controllers to work with my Windows 7 computer. The old Xbox One controller works fine. (the new ones have 3.5mm headphone jacks; those are the ones that won't work for me)
