Xbox one External hard drive disconnecting and reconnecting

My external hard drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. i have power cycled the machine, replaced the cords 3 times and also have tried all 3 usb ports, i just cant figure out whats going on.

Is perhaps the external switching to power saving mode from 'lack of use'?

Hello,
Have you tried this external drive on another computer or with another USB cable?
Such disconnecting issues could happen due to many reasons in daily use.

Well it's more of a constant on and off but I actually hooked it up to a different Xbox one and no issues. So I'm pretty sure it's the USB connectors
