Hey there again, Sadietov55!

Indeed, some screenshots from Disk management & Device Manager would be really useful!
Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely to get the external HDD fixed on the Xbox console. Your PC is the best platform to troubleshoot the drive. Have you tried running any HDD diagnostic utilities?

I'd also suggest you check what are the options you are given when you right-click on the drive in Disk Management. If you are able to Change Drive Letter and Paths, then you should definitely do it. The hyperlink will take you to our knowledge base's tutorial on how to execute the procedure. Luckily, with external drives it shouldn't have any consequences for your data.

Welcome to the community, Sadietov55!

Did you unplug the external HDD while it was still running on the Xbox? If that's the case, you might have corrupted the file system. I'd recommend you to plug the hard drive back in your PC and check how it appears in Disk Management. Another thing that might work is swapping the USB cable with a different one and see if that will help you recognize the drive.
I'd also suggest you download the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool and run the tests from it to determine the health and SMART status. If you cannot find it on their official website, you can refer to some third-party testing tool suggestions from the forum. Make sure you backup all the data from the drive as soon as you gain access to it!

Hope this helps. Keep me posted. :)

Thanks for your help, so everything was turned off when it was unplugged so I don't think that's the Problem, in disk management i can see half memory is used (presumably the half that has all his game data) and half is unused, I'm scared to play around with it in disk management as I really am a complete novice and really don't want to make things worse, when I return home later perhaps I can provide some screen shots and you could help me through it? After checking disk management with it plugged into laptop i tried it again in Xbox and on this occasion I got a message pop up with an option of formatting or using as music storage? Something like that, but I chose to cancel as I thought formatting would wipe all data..so then I was back to square one. And again ever since then it's not recognising it, I have tried using a different lead with no success, I have tried turning Xbox on and plugging it in, I have tried turning Xbox on with it already plugged in and have tried Xbox reset
