I wanted to make this pc as cheap as possible but providing more power/performance than both the ps4 and the xbox one.

Sadly there aren't many games on Linux and even with SteamOS, there will only be a marginal increase in Linux games. For gaming right now, Win7 or Win8 is the only option for having a multitude of games sadly.

True that, Win8 should be the best option for me but thats personal preference

If you build a PC...and I would forever recommend it. For many many reason, and most games come to PC in time, plus things like sweetFX, ENB, even just hard working modders add so much to so many games. Just play Dark Souls 2 on 360, then play it with GeDoSaTo, yea it you will need a decent machine but my 2 year old 650ti, i5 3350 has ran anything I have tried. Only games to give slow down thus far are Watchdogs with one of the 2 major mods, the one that looks like it would bomb your fps, and Witicher 2 with SweetFX, and Uber Sampling. IMO thats not to bad.....

***Back to your direct question***
That build would be on able to play most modern games on medium to high depending on FPS you wanted, but imo you will regret not spending the extra cash on a few of those parts.

  • HDDMy main issue is the Seagate HDD. Personally, I have owned 2 over the past few years both ended up with corrupt sectors, and the final one had the boot sector go bad, it was a lot of fun. Bought a Western Digital Black, just a little more expensive, but runs quieter, and in 6+ months of constant use I have had zero issues with it. WD Black, same as mine .

I am also not a fan of anything AMD/ATI...just bad experience with my first few builds. My current build is full Intel, and has performed beyond my expectations, honestly still runs and sounds like the day it was put together. Intel cost a little more in general, but from my experience it is worth it. I am sure some will say it doesn't matter. And it may not on certain products, or whatever. Just giving my opinion.

  • Motherboard The motherboard you have picked out looks solid, I am using a Gigabyte atm myself and it has performed perfectly thus far. If you did decide to go Intel lol...just stick with Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, EVGA, and I have read good things about the AsRock boards. Just match sockets, proper chipset, and all that good stuff.

  • CPU The AMD CPU you have selected seems pretty good on paper. Assuming it performs the way it should and last a resonable amount of time it should be plenty of computing power current gaming build, obviously we dont know whats to come lol.... Anyway, If you did decide to go for the good stuff and go Intel, Something like i5-3470 3.2GHz (3.6GHz Turbo) , or i5-3570 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Both for the LGA1155 socket, or plenty of other CPUs with similar power and more power.

  • Case/PSU/Other Stuff I would spend the extra 10 or 20 bucks on a nice case I opted for a bare bones black NZXT and considering for 20 bucks or so I could have had some much better to look at, and even things like USB ports in slightly better places. Power Supply I would get at least 800, but 700 would run it I think, did not take the time to add it all up. Plus 800+ would leave you a little room to grow. Disc Drive Looks fine, I went with ASUS, sure that one will work just fine. Little tip on things like Disc Drives, HDDs, and stuff OEM is sometimes cheaper because you should already have extra cords. RAM The set you have looks fine, if I was going to recommend anything in a simialar price range it would be the set I am using Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Probably the same in the end I really dont know.

Anyway, good luck on your build.
