Xbox one throttling

Hi, I had an issue a week or so ago which I seemed to solve initially, for now I’m not so sure.

Basically, my internet speeds are pretty much as they should be until about 4pm. Then my Xbox one download speed drops from 220mbps to anywhere from 20mbps-120mbps. What is strange is that if I run a speed test on any other device I get 220mbps and equally if I run a speed test through the Xbox browser I get 220mbps. It’s simply the built in speed test that is reducing my speeds by more than half and also fluctuating my latency. I’m very confused by this. Is my router throttling my Xbox one and if so why and how do I stop it? It’s fine during the day up until about 4pm.

Thanks,
Tom.

Solution
Not sure what else to suggest.

If everything is okay up until around 4 p.m. then there is something taking place on your network at or near that time. A backup, an update, or an attempt to do one or the other.

Or the other devices "come home" and start joining the network causing a bottleneck - maybe at the Archer.

Have you been able to note what time the expected performance returns? That may be another clue. People go to bed and traffic is reduced.

What for example is your gaming PC doing? Maybe turn if off and see if the throttling stops. Or find some association with another device on the network.

Per your diagram "there is a lot".

Take a look at the Archer's logs.

Make and model router?

Try a different LAN port. Try another known working Ethernet cable.

Check the router's logs: if available and enabled they may be recording some error situation.

Are the date and time correct?

Maybe the router is in need of a firmware update.

I am seeing at least four devices:

Kirstys-iPhone
BLACKBERRY-D977
David-Laptop
Tom-PC

Are all legitimate? All wireless? Are you using an Access Point?

Any known system or device activities beginning around 4 p.m.: e.g., updates, backups, someone comes home and uses a particular device?

Not seeing anything in the log attributable to the Xbox One

Make and model router? Make and model Access Point (if there is one)?

Do you truly have an Ethernet connection from the Belkin router to the wall port to the TP Link Archer? (Wall port to wall port bypassing the switch feeding the entire house?

Is the Archer connected via LAN or WAN port? Should be LAN.

Is DHCP disabled on the Archer? Only one router should be providing DHCP IP addresses.

Yes, the belkin is bypassing switch via Ethernet to the wall port, I did this as the switch slows speeds to 100mb.

Routers are connected Lan to LAN.

DHCP is disabled on the Archer.
