This sums it up

Microsoft has announced a new early access program for indie titles, dubbed Xbox Game Preview. With this service, you'll have the ability to play games that are in active development and provide feedback about them -- similar to what Steam currently does with its community. Xbox Game Preview is expected to roll out later today on Xbox One, featuring titles such as The Long Dark, Sheltered, Elite Dangerous, Day Z and more.

They also said that certain 360 games can be simply downloaded on your Xbox One and you can play them.

That's kind of a good/bad thing. It's incredibly hard to get a game on to consoles usually. And early access games are notorious for being well, just 25% finished cash grabs.

It would make development of them easier I suppose if they were xbox one exclusives but i dunno how many indie devs really want that.

But it will be somewhat dificult to get good feedback from console players, they're definitely not used to the true bugginess of early access titles like PC gamers are.

Backwards Compatibility Is Here

Phil Spencer also came out to announce that the Xbox One will finally be able to play Xbox 360 games on its latest console. This has been an issue with the next generation consoles, and with this move, Microsoft is challenging Sony's game streaming service and digital store, both of which provide classic titles from the original PlayStation to the PlayStation 3.

They showed off a classic, Mass Effect, playing on Xbox One. The game performs like it was on Xbox 360, but Xbox Live allows you to take screenshots, stream titles, and DVR your videos via Windows 10. The feature will be available later this holiday season, and as an added bonus, you will not be charged extra for the Xbox 360 games that you already own.

Personally i do not care as i never had the 360, but it's great to see this.

Eh, notice that only about 100 titles are supported? Points to either recompilation or an emulator, both of which are going to run into a LOT of compatibility problems going forward. It's telling they demoed ME1, rather then ME2. Wonder which one was easier to get working?

So yeah, I suspect a lot of major titles won't be supported by this. Basically, it's the same problem Sony ran into with the Software emulated PS3, which only had about 70% backwards compatibility. That's why Sony went the streaming route for the Ps4.

Pretty much the only reason I use my PS3 is because it had backwards compatibility for PS2 games and can upscale them. Which was also made it a pain to replace when it got stolen, and the fact it was only the first gen they did this with.
