Trying to get my Xbox One wireless controller on my Windows 7 64 bits machine was a living hell. It took me 20 actual hours to get it working.

I have been consistently using the controller and I was happy with it. No issues. But machines like to wait for their moment to laugh at you. I have not played with the controller in about 2 or 3 weeks and now, of course, it doesn't work anymore

I'm connecting the wireless usb adapter to my PC and first of all, it will only turn on after pressing the button for a couple of seconds sometimes. Others it just will refuse to turn on. Under device management a ghost Xbox wireless adapter shows up even after I've disconnected it.

When I manage to turn it on, I grab the controller and press the big Xbox button for a second to turn on the controller and it instantly hooks to the wireless controller. This doesn't always happen. Sometimes both LEDs will blink forever and the controller will never connect.

So when it does connect, it does show up in joy.cpl (Windows game devices) and when inspecting properties and pressing button the test works and the button icons light up and the joystick input display moves around. Although I haven't consistently tested this in joy.cpl every time the controller connect. So it works (again, when it connects, which is happen much less often than when it does not), but it doesn't last long. Give it about 20 seconds tops and the connection is lost and reconnection just won't happen.

I have of course tried restarting Windows. Didn't help. The controller is working just fine when connected via cable. I have not made any software change in the past 3 weeks except uninstalling and reinstalling the GPU drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller. A controller has nothing to do with the GPU so this should be completely unrelated. Now that I mention it, I of course also have an issue with the monitor and GPU driver, check out my other post if you wish to help, I'd appreciate it a lot.

I hope any of you can help. As I said configuring the controller in the first place was one of the most frustrating computer things I ever went through, and I don't want to repeat the experience.

Thank you in advance.

That's odd. I have a couple of Xbox One controllers that I'll regularly plug into different desktops & laptops I have around the house. Setup on each system only took about 1 - 2 minutes(pairing). Granted, they are all running on Windows 10(with the exception of a SteamOS system).

I'm guessing you don't want to switch from Windows 7. So, are you using onboard blue tooth or a plug-in device? Have you updated the blue tooth driver?
