Xbox wont connect to network.

I recently set up a hard wired connection from my router to my bedroom where the xbox is. It is a long ethernet cable going through the attic and is terminated at wall jacks. This setup works fine when I plug the cable into my computer but when plugged into the xbox it won't talk to the router and can't get an ip address. I've tried manually assigning one and restarting everything multiple times to no avail. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

That one is quite odd because if it is hard wired it really should have no issues at all getting a signal. I am assuming you set up the Xbox network connection to get all of it's settings automatically (DHCP)?

And i assume this is an Xbox 360 and not the original Xbox? I have mine hard wired as well and switch the cord back and forth between the 360 and PS3 all the time without any issues. Also have you taken the Xbox and hooked it up with a shorter cord directly to the router and see if it gets a signal then (just to make sure it is not the port itself on the Xbox that may be the problem)

I have hard wired it before with no troubles but until recently the cable wasn't hidden. The thing that is really mind boggling is that I can get internet to my computer if I use the cable but can't get an ip address assigned to the xbox. The DHCP settings are set to automatically assign me one.

Diagnose the connection using the utility on the Xbox...

Where does it bring up the red cross?

Between the Xbox and router? or router and internet/xbox live?

The x appears between xbox and network. The suggestions I get are "turn off the router for 30 sec" "make sure DCHP is on" and "make sure MAC filtering isn't blocking the console" but none of these work.

Ok that is very strange.

Sounds to me like your wired connection on your xbox is skrewed.

Have you tried them steps?

If so, and it works on wireless fine, then im saying its your port on the xbox.

Today when I get home I'm going to plug it into the router with a small cable to see if the port is working at all.

That is what i would try first. If you hook directly to the router making sure you are using a crossover cable (not a patch cable) and you get internet then it should narrow it down to either the type of wire you ran to the jack in your room from the router, or the cord you use from that wall jack to the Xbox. If not then there is a chance the RJ45 port n the Xbox is not working.

If all else fails (and you tested the port on the Xbox and know it works) and you are 100 feet or less away from the router you could get a wireless gaming adapter. Or maybe a cheaper wireless router to set up in your room as a wireless access point. I do understand that for the online gaming, getting the hard wired connection would give you the best results. My wireless worked just fine but i decided that to make sure i had zero lag i would hard wire both consoles i have.

Easy way to tell would be to look at both ends. And yes the cable type makes a difference.
A crossover cable (which is what you would usually use to go from the router to the console) will have the wire colors on both ends of the cable in a different order. Hence the name crossover cable as the wires cross over each other to form a different order.

The other type called a patch cable or straight through cable will have the wires in the same order on both ends.

Crossover cables are used to connect two of the same device together, bypassing the need for a router/hub. You wouldn't use it to connect to a router 😉

If the network cable works correctly with your PC, but not with your Xbox, then I'd say the issue is most likely with the network adapter in your Xbox.

Doesn't matter if it's 568b or 568a, as long as both ends are the same. The RJ45 jack at the ends are actually male.

Try connecting a different network cable to the Xbox, make sure it's not crossover, and try keeping the cable under 25 metres.

Sorry about being away from this for so long, but I've been extremely busy and haven't had time. It looks like the cable is my problem because when I tried a different one it worked fine.

hi there,
just my 2 cent on this issue. i have a network tester and a cat5 crimper. i had the same issue as the op.
the cable was fine, my laptop could use it. but for some reason the rj45 plug on the cable wouldn't work right with the rj45 socket on the xbox it's self.
it would drop pin 6. it was easy for me to fix. i just re-crimped a new plug onto the cable and it's fine now. but if you don't have a rj45 crimper. you could try and use the other end of the cable. or use another cable from a different manufacturer.
i think the xbox doesn't take every rj45 plug. it's very odd. i was using the xbox cable from GAME, it was meant to be for the xbox.

I've tried with both a router and a modem.... Neither one worked for me.... 🙁
