Hi,

I am planning to build a storage server and have decided to get a used Xeon E3-1220L v3 due to its low TDP of 13W.

My question is can i just put a large heatsink on this and due to its low tdp can it work with just the case fans ?

Solution
I wouldn't chance it. I would use a heatsink with a fan, if it were me.

Theoretically, if your case had exceptional airflow, you might get away with using just a heatsink. However, why take the risk?
What are the specs for your storage server?

Have you used/heard of Freenas or NAS4FREE/XigmaNAS as the operating system for a storage server?

The OS itself is ran from an easily replaceable flash drive which doesn't take up a sata port on your server.

Those 2 support on the fly compression and decompression for data using the cpu of the server, which can save space for data that is compressible.

They also support deduplication and other features that a storage server would use.

thanks for answers.

@derekullo. yes the idea is to run freenas from a USB and use two 4TB hdds on software raid. I already have a very old case and a few parts lying around. Wont be using for any thing other than file sharing and as a network backup solution
