Im building a gaming rig, gaming is the most intensive thing i will be doing on this machine. Battlefield 4 is a big game in mind for this rig and that is the game i will primarily be playing. I was looking at the Xeon E3 1230 V2/V3 (also wondering which one out of those 2 would be better to get) instead of the i5 4670k because of HT which seems to give i7's and the 8350 a noticeable boost in BF4. Also since this is my first gaming rig im not really sure about overclocking, with a xeon that wouldent be a choice but i dont know if i might become interested in it in the future but im not sure.

Solution
If you're not planning to overclock then we can change the CPU for other models that's cheaper and then bring the GPU back up to R9-280x.
Also the first configuration with a total of $704.95, I forgot to add the OS. adding the OS would be $100 more making it $804.95

Here's one without a Core i5 4670K
CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($184.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock H87 Performance ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card ($299.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ Amazon)...

From what i read xeons work with most regular motherboards. is that false?

I was looking at the Asus Z87-A if i were to get the 4670k, i would assume i could get a equal quality motherboard that dosent have the same overclocking capabilities for cheaper since there wont be any overclocking on the xeon

The E3 1230 V2/V3 are 1150 socket so it would still be the same range of motherboards. From what i see its the HT vs overclocking, and what is going to be more useful taking into account games like BF4 taking advantage of 8 cores

Ahh didnt notice that. I guess its up to determine which motherboard to get for which one, and which one would be better (i assume the v3),

Some Xeon don't have onboard graphics, not that it's needed, but it's good to have as a backup.
Get the Core i5 to be on the safe side as not all consumer based board will work with a Xeon. If it does not work, it gives a micro code error.

did u get xeon or i5??? i m in the same situation that u were saying right here... some ppl in this forum told me to go for i5.
what did u do?

I havent got it yet but im pretty set on the i5 currently

sadly im not. Also due to money restrictions unless black friday/cyber monday sales prove otherwise i might have to downgrade to a 3570k since currently it costs 30$ less, and also the mobo i would be getting for the 3570k costs 30$ less than the 4670k mobo.

Well my budget is a bit odd, its 750$ but 270$ of that is on amazon in gift cards. I own the PSU which is CX600, i am reusing the CD Drive, 1TB WD Blue HDD, and 8GB 1600Mhz RAM from my current PC.

It was going to be more since i planned on selling my PS3 and a bunch of stuff with it for 180-200$ but it hasent sold yet and since i plan on buying this during black friday/cyber monday which is only a week away im just assuming its not going to sell and am making my build based of current money.

Parts you already have are not included. Not sure if you want a new case. But it's added anway.
All parts are from Amazon.

If you're going to use your old case and then all the other parts, then basically all you need to upgrade is just CPU, Motherboard, and Graphic Card.
