I want to buy either of these.
Even though both have exactly same specs & features and perform almost equally in benchmark results, 1240 is $20 extra.
What do I get for that extra $20 if I buy it?

Solution

This is the best I can do. Some good info about all the e3 xeons in there as well.

Yes. I checked that up. It is a typo. Both have DMI2 Bus Type.
What do u mean by "revision" of same chip?

Well I just looked and honestly I havent the slightest idea about what makes them different. They are both hyperthreaded haswell quad cores, the have the same amount of cache, run at the same speed, I dont know what diffrent about them other than the name. And the e3-1240 v3 is the old version, check out the 1241 v3 which is also pretty much exactly the same but that one turbos to 3.9ghz instead of 3.8.

Hmm but intel also came out with the 1241 v3 about the same time as the 1231 v3 so i dont think the 1231 is the newer version of the 1240. There has to be some minute difference between the 1241 and 1231 if intel gave it a different name and charged more for it, you would think.

It pisses me off when there is literally no difference between them but still one costs more than the other.

1231 v3 is Haswell Refresh, released on May 2014, the 1240 v3 is Haswell(non refresh) released in June 2013, so 1231 v3 is a tiny bit better and even cost less, the best price performance hyperthreading CPU you can get at the moment.

But if you look at that link, both of them are mentioned as Haswell. Is that another typo?
Can u please provide a link where it says 1240 is haswell and 1231 is haswell refresh?
I will read it with my own eyes and end this dilemma.

It probably wont say that on the ark intel page. But yes the 1231 v3 is haswell refresh, just like the 1241 v3 is haswell refresh.

The 1230 v3 and 1240 v3 are the original haswell.

okay thanks! But a link that confirms this would be much appreciated.

The release date says it all, the 1240 v3 was released when all other Haswell were released, the 1231 v3 was released a year later when all other Haswell Refresh were released, the Xeon versions are far less talked about and not marketed at all that's why you get much less info about tham then on the Core i5 and i7 CPU's.
