okay so basically i've come under the impression that performance for price with intensive gaming in mind, Xeon E3-1231v3, Xeon E3-1241v3, win everytime over the i5-4670k, or i5-4690k. The case is made that do 1440p/4k gaming in ultra truly need such overclockability for such little perfromance gain when running z97 compared to z87 or h87, b85 running zeon e3-1231v3? would fps seriously be less than a overclocked i5?! im building a 1440p/4k gaming rig and the choice of either z87/h87/b85 vs more expensive z97 for overclockability with the i5's. i need to establish a base for one of those chipsets and cpus. any and all opinions are welcome!! thanks in advanced!

Why on earth would one upgrade from a haswell xeon/I7 to a broadwell one? That makes literally no sense. B85 boards do usually offer same features and ports but are up to $50 cheaper. Unless the full form factor is a must have, I have not yet seen any reason to choose a h97 board.

For gaming, both on stock, the two cpu's will be equal. If you overclock the I5, it will "outperform" the xeon, but only by a few fps at best. If you already have an aftermarket cooler or want to sli anyway, go with the I5 and a z87/z97 board. If you have not planned on either, the xeon (or an I5 4590 as equal choice for gaming) is the right choice.
It comes down to wants. Primarily, internal graphics for running extra monitors and/or overclocking? Xeon will give you better performance for cheaper price if you want neither option.

If your not going to OC, then I advise going to H97 and no less. Since H97 allows you to upgrade to future processors coming out soon.
