So I'm thinking of an upgrade and couldn't choose between these two, they are both about $250. Is the ability to overclock really worth gettingt the i5? My Mobo is ASUS H81M-E (with updated bios to support pentium g3258 overclocking)

Solution
If you insist on keeping your motherboard, the Xeon is the better option of the two. You would not be able to overclock the i5 4690k on your motherboard.

If I were going to spend $250 on an upgrade, I would get an i5 4440, 4460, 4570, or 4590 and a H97 motherboard.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($186.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($66.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $253.87

Note: The i5 4460 is $7 cheaper than the 4590 and the i5 4440 is $20 cheaper

i would prefer not upgrading my mobo.

so the xeon would be a better choice?

Depends on your needs. If you just using your pc for gaming and casual use, an i5 is fine to use.
If you do video rendering, editing, image editing, then the xeon would be better for you.

but i guess my question really is, is the $25 more worth it for the xeon?
