Xeon E5462 in a Dell Optiplex 780

Solution
X3360 is the best Xeon that will officially work, someone has claimed a X3362 works; the E5 series doesnt work.

Problems, you dont say what form factor, Dell do this model in everything from Tower to USFF.

That advice is based on the chipset, Dell are notorious for locking down the BIOS in their SFF & USFF PCs, so it MAY not have the microcode to allow the motherboard to recognise the Xeon.

Assuming SSF/USFF.

Next issue is power draw, can the Dell psu supply enough juice.

Final issue is heat; the fans Dell fit are noisy and dont push much air, but if you dont use fans with a very close rpm match, the BIOS may shut down ALL the fans and fry your new CPU (happened to me with a Dell USFF).
