Xeon or i7 for Gaming

I have engineering samples that were given to me.
I have a dual xeon set-up with Xeon e5-2658s with a total of 16 cores.
Would it be better to have 16 cores total or have a single CPU such as the 4820k clocked over 4.5ghz for gaming

For gaming?

Since you have these samples for free I assume, the 4820 4.5ghz overclocked would be better for gaming, Xeon's aren't that great actually for gaming.

However- if you do professional work such as video editing, photoshop, etc. the Xeon would be better.

For now a single quad core i5 or i7 overclocked would be better for gaming. This trend seems to be changing as we speak.

For gaming i suggest the i5 4670k because its not too different for gaming.

Saying xeons aren't great for gaming is like saying i7 is not great for gaming. I could be talking about a dual core low power i7, same as you could be talking about a dual core xeon. These are just marketing names and really mean nothing to performance vs other cpus. If you are implying xeons are somehow inferior in games, you'd be wrong.

Right- but he is talking about the i7 4820. Which has a higher clock speed than the Xeon- and in real world scenarios- Xeon's arent that great for gaming. I'm not saying that their inferior- but in this case, the 4820 out preforms the Xeon.

The 4820 has a lot higher clockspeed- and most games simply dont leverage the Xeon's cores.

I recommend he uses the Xeon in professional or a prosumer system, instead of a gaming system.

It'd more effective in that scenario.

You're still blanketing xeons saying they aren't great when this is still not true. In the real world, a competent cpu can max a game just fine no matter what name it has. Yes in this case a 4820 is better than the 2658 for gaming, but that's not what I'm getting at.

Xeon's are fantastic- just that in this scenario, there is no point of using a Xeon as it's not that great in comparison to a 4820 in actual practicality, its not practical. Xeons in my opinon are fine, and if that was his only choice than of course he should use a Xeon.. I just feel that it would be better used in another rig.

And dual low core power i7? I don't know of any consumer desktop product as such- unless its on the mobile side...

There are some extremely powerful quad core Xeons that are GREAT for gaming.

My friend Xeon is a server processor which can handle more than one process at the same time It is made for that, but it cannot handle heavy application such as games, Games are very high usage of processes, And where of Core i7 is made for gaming core i7 can handle many processes along while playing games...That's the difference
