xeon vs i5

Solution

Xeon cpu's are mainly produced for server and multimedia pc's, and not so much for gaming. But many them perform just as well as the best i5 and i7 series when it commes gaming. The downside is that they often cost alot more and there's no real gain (seen from a gaming perspective).

i5 4670k, i7 4670k and i7 4960X Extreme edition are the most used and the best cpu's for gaming.

Yes, the Xeon series is primarly made for workstations, servers and are often used in proffesional multimedia pc's that does heavy 3D animation and video editing + rendering.

Gaming pc's have no need for cpu's that are 6-core + 12 threaded or 8-core + 16 threaded for that matter. As the coding game producers are using most games will only use 1 core anyway, this however is going to change in the near future, where most games are going to start to benefit from multiple cores (hopefully we'll see this take effect in a years time).

I'll agree on the fact that the 4960x is slightly overpriced, and is far from a value optimized product. But if you have the budget for it (or not budget to follow at all), then grabbing one is not somthing you'd regret.

Indeed, whats why i wrote (or not budget at all). If your the type of person that can spend money without thinking twice about what its spent on, then an Extreme edition cpu is tincy vincy bit better, but most people buy it with "because i can" thoughts and for show.

Recommendations for gaming cpu's (starting with the lowest budget -> to the highest):

i5 4670k -> i7 3770k -> i7 3930k -> i7 4960x.

And if you happen to be doing stuff like 3D Photoshop, Cinema 4D or HQ video editing + whiping you butt with 100$ bills, then you could go for a "Xeon E5-2687W v2".

If its pure game performance you are after then you buy according to your budget following the list i wrote down in my last post. Anyone of those cpu's will be epic for running games. :)
