Question Xeon x5460 on g41m p28

I like to upgrade my core 2 quad q6600 to x5460 xeon i need help will it work on my g41m p28?
No, it won't be compatible. You need an lga 771 motherboard that supports that Xeon. The best CPU you can use on that motherboard is a Q9650. The $30-50 you spend on a Q9650 used, would be better spent on an Athlon 200ge a B450 motherboard and 2x4GB memory kit for around $170-190. You could then upgrade to an Ryzen 5 later on and sell the Athlon 200ge.

G41M-P28 is not on the S771 compatibility list. G41M-P26, G41M-P33 and G41M-P34 are all tested to be compatible so it is very likely G41M-P28 would work too, you'd just have to merge the Xeon microcodes into the BIOS yourself.
It can work, but I said that it won't, because honestly most people asking would never be able to figure it out and would likely brick their motherboard. So unless the OP actually has need of a Xeon, a Q9650 with a new cooler would be the best option in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply
I want to max out the performance of this motherboard i would like the x5470 but think it will to much for the motherboard but please reply if the x5470 has any compatibility on my motherboard

And can the x5470 compatible on my motherboard? If so i might just buy the x5470 if not then ill stick with the x5460 one😁
The issue at this point isn't whether it's compatible, the Xeon x5470 can work on your motherboard. The problem is, you have to modify your motherboard in two ways and buy an adapter for the Xeon CPU. First, you need to find an already modded bios file or create one to update your motherboard to work with the Xeon. The second is you need to modify the motherboard socket so the lga771 Xeon CPU fits into the socket designed for lga775 CPUs. There are alignment tabs on the lga775 socket that are there to stop you installing other CPU not designed for it. The Xeon CPU adapter is very cheap and can be bought on ebay, at least where I live. I have no idea what markets you have access to, so you might not even be able to get the adapter.

I understand that it's usually cheaper to buy a Xeon for older sockets and I'm not telling you to give up your effort into tracking everything down. I'm just recommending you try to get a Q9650 instead so you don't have to modify anything except maybe update the bios to the newest version for your board before installing the new CPU. The performance difference between a Q9650 and an x5470 is close (around 10% difference) and you can still overclock the Q9650 if you make sure to buy a good cooler. You might also need to buy a new power supply if your current one is also 10 years old and you plan to overclock.

I agree, if you can't figure out what you need to do from the link I included that has very thorough instructions, then it's probably not something you should attempt.

The G41 platform is a very poor one for overclocking, as it has no strap to go over ~340FSB so any 1333 processor you choose will have to run near its stock speed. That means the difference between 9, 9.5 and 10x multiplier is actually significant (Q9650, X5460 and X5470, respectively. The X5460 is half the price of the other two). The easiest way to use a Xeon is to buy a pre-modded processor with the S775 slots already cut and the adapter welded-on (no sticker to get misaligned).

But before even ordering any processor you should flash the BIOS--that way if you brick the board you aren't out the money for a CPU you then can't use. If you can't modify it yourself, then someone at a BIOS-mod forum would likely do it for you--but then you'd have to trust they did it right. Windows 8-10 are usually out of the question without the updated microcodes, although earlier OSes may well work (just with errata that was corrected after the CPU was designed).

Personally, if I already had a Q6600 on G41, I would simply set the FSB to 333 and call it a day. It would run at exactly the same 3.0GHz the Q9650 would (as it also has a 9x multiplier), and perform close enough unless you had software that required SSE 4.1. Buying a $40 CPU for a system worth $50 afterwards simply isn't cost-effective.

You can get a Q9650 for $32.50 from china and not worry about microcode https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33009431643.html?spm=2114.12010612.8148356.2.36e25c35N0KAUs

For the Xeon you need a modded bios. Here is a discussion from 2016 , the link for the modded bios doesn't work.
My boards did not need the bios modified. Q9650 needs the Version 26.11, 2012-12-10 bios http://download.msi.com/bos_exe/mb/7592vQB.zip
