Xeon x5650 or core i5 7500

Hello I'm in a bit of a pickle here I want to upgrade my Pentium to a core i5 7500 but in Canada it costs $269 and I'm a bit on a budget because I want to upgrade my gpu too. I was thinking of getting a LGA 1366 Mobo from AliExpress and a Xeon x5650. I already have the Dr 3 ram. Not sure weather or not I should go with the i5 or xeon cause the Xeon plus mobo only costs $157.

For gaming an X5650 will be significantly slower. It is at least 5 generations older. Maybe 6. The X5650 was released in 2010. Why do you think a 2010 CPU will compete with a 2017 CPU ?

Well I will overclock that Xeon to 4ghz.

Xeons are not overclock friendly. With a base clock of 2.66Ghz, 4Ghz is a LONG way to go. It is a 95W CPU so the thermals might be manageable. But, I think you will be disappointed.

I'm putting it in a computer desk with a lot of air flow and a good cooler. You think I should go with a xeon if the thermals are the only thing or should go with core i5 because of upgrade ability?

I think you should go with the i5 because it is a better CPU for gaming. RAM is 3X faster, PCIe is at least 1 generation newer. nVME storage is available.
For gaming, I bet a G4560 is better.

I am not a fan of 7 year old CPUs unless you are paid to keep an existing 7 year old server running.

I think you should go with the i5 because it is a better CPU for gaming. RAM is 3X faster, PCIe is at least 1 generation newer. nVME storage is available.

Yeah true and for a gpu I have a GTX 1050

I mean I would even rather use the $60 Pentium g4560 over the Xeon if for no other reason than to be on the newest platform(LGA1151)

That old Xeon is a poor investment. Where you have a 1050 the g4560 isnt a bad option at all and you'll have an upgrade path to an i5 or i7 asxwell as support for current tech.

Ok thx for your advice I strongly agree with you. I have a g4400

Ah then a simple i5 7500 would be a quick, easy, and awesome upgrade for you. Just make sure you update your BIOS first before taking out the g4400.

Yep just make sure your BIOS is up to date if you go with an i5 7xxx
