since the comcast modems are modem/router combos do i need to have an extra router in between to make my switch work for extra ethernet connections?

No extra router needed. If you need more ethernet ports, just hookup your switch to any of the Comcast's router LAN ports.

You say "modem" in the title of the post, and "modem/router" in the body. You need "modem/router" (or "gateway" in Comcast lingo) for more than one connection.
