I am planning to build a gaming computer for around $1000. I plan to get a SLI/XFire compatible motherboard, so when my graphics card can no longer max out games, I can get another and SLI/XFire it. Is this a good idea? Please justify your answer. Any help is appreciated.

Great idea..... that's the exact approach i took for many years ... the downside is, will the card you want be available when you are ready to upgrade.... often it is not, at least not "new". I have not had any SLI issues other than profiles not being available when a game 1st comes out .... usually takes 2-3 weeks.... CF takes a bit longer. The CF frame lag issues have been almost completely addressed tho I have had some issues when using more than 2 cards.

Nowadays however Id say that 60% of the builds I do are SLI / CF from the getgo,

I like SLI and CF. Since AMD developed their beta driver with Frame Pacing, micro-stutter is almost non-existent. SLI seems to have fixed that with firmware sometime back. I have been using dual cards since the 8800GTS days. But I also have a single card rig. But as mentioned above, if you wait too long to get the 2nd card, you'll be looking at used ones.
