I have two Ultra towers both equipped with the same Asus P7P55 LX motherboards, Corsair 2x 4 GB sticks of RAM and Intel Core I5 CPU 750 @ 2.67 GHz. Running on Windows 7 64 bit.

One of the cases had 2 of the XFX Radeon HD 6950 2 GB video cards installed with a crossfire bridge and it was working fine. We then needed to get the second case back up and running so we decided to shut the other down and take one of the cards and put it in the 2nd case.

At first the case the cards were originally in worked fine and we shipped it on location to be used by a customer. It arrived and when we set it up the computer would turn on fans spinning bios beeping like it was loading just fine but it would not display post or any signal at all from either DVI port. The card was re seated, power cables all checked and still nothing. We ended up buying a new Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 TI. It worked right away and is having no issues.

The second case we tried the card in would not work at all just like the first ended up doing.. Same issue powers up makes the proper beep noises like it does with other video cards installed which boot up fine but the Radeon doesn't have any signal. We thought it was just a bad card until the other system got to California and also had the same issues.

Just for fun I also took both cards and put it in the 2nd system we have here at the shop to see if maybe they were locked into only working in the crossfire set up for some off the wall reason. Of course nothing from either card.. I have also defaulted the bios, removed the cmos and pin to reset it, updated the chipset and firmware on motherboard and still nothing..

Any ideas? Is it possible to have both cards just randomly fail after they were working before?

Let me get this straight:
PC A is identical to PC B except PC A has CF'd 6950's
you took one 6950 out of PC A and into PC B,
now both don't work.
the 6950 was taken out of PC A and into PC B in CF mode,
PC B still doesn't work.
Does that sum it up correctly?

hmmm strange...... are the cards reference design, does it have a bios switch? try switching the bios. It is poss for both to be damaged when it was shipped, although unlikely, did you take anti static precautions. Try a hdmi cable instead of dvi,

i know i am slightly confused too

Yep basically took one card from the other first one still worked until it was shipped to location. Now both don't work..

Only one was shipped but it was installed in the computer. The second one that was taken out for the other computer was just here in shop in that 2nd computer. No we don't use the anti static bands but i've been building computers over the past 10 years and I've never had issues with static and video cards let alone 2 of them and one working until shipped and then the other not working right away..

i have no idea then mate sorry, its really strange, trying to think what it could be other than dodgey cards. I know this is prob pointless but have you tried another gfx card in the computers you are using to test the 6950s

Yep I tried it in this tech machine I'm on now that uses a Nvidia 260 and it wont' power up either so I guess that just leaves the cards being the problem child.. Bad news is they were purchased months ago from Tiger direct and I think their return policy is 30 days..

And thanks for trying, I was just going crazy trying to think of other causes so I needed some fresh minds on it.

This is unlikely but id also suspect theft, someone swapping the good cards for faulty identical cards, it happens and most people would do it if they could get away with it,

if thats not it then could be a bad batch of cards if u can RMA them and state they failed within a few days of each other,

or the 2nd pc motherboard/psu could of shorted out the cards that also happens,

sorry couldnt help more

Surely they have a longer warranty than 30 days if they become faulty, return them both, but whats strange is they both went at the same time, unless they were somehow damaged together when getting removed from the 1st machine maybe by static. Although that is generally used when nothing else can be explained lol. Ive had some wierd stuff happen tho so it is possible. RMA them bad boys and get replacements. Good luck mate, sorry could be much help but it must be the cards.

If the cards are the standard/reference (GPU@800Mhz) design they will probably have the duel bios feature. The switch is located (if it is there) on the edge of the card by the tab that goes into the PCi slot. It normally is in the #1 position. So if I understand you; there was a CF set-up that worked. Then when you separated the cards and one worked before being shipped out but not on arrival; subsequent testing of that card proved it was not operational. The second card of the pair remained in your shop and now it too does not work. At this point you have 2 6950 and neither work either singly or in CF. If this is correct I would guess something happened in the handling during removal and installing. RMA/Send both cards back the XFX and tell them they died in your CF installation. I bet they will replace them for you. XFX has a 2 year warrenty.
