Hello, I bought a new XFX Radeon RX 480 RS Edition 8GB from Amazon a couple of days ago. I couldn't test it right away because I had to buy and active DVI to VGA adapter and didn't knew that until I read the manual of the graphics card. But I test it today and that's when the problems started.

The power supply I have is a Corsair CX500M 500 W with 38 Amps at 12 Volts and I used the 6+2 power pin. I don't think that the power supply might be the problem but I don't have any other to verify that.

The problem is, like in the title, when I try to play games it restarts the computer after the image freezes then goes black. If I use stock settings on the graphics card (plug & install driver & play) the games crashes in less then 5 minutes, if I try to modify the settings on it the games last up to 10 minutes before crashing.

So far I tried:
*Safe Mode => DDU => Restart => Install Crimson 17.2.1 ... PC crashes.
*Safe Mode => AMD Driver Uninstaller => Restart => Install Crimson 17.2.1 ... PC crashes
*Undervolted GPU in Wattman and Afterburner to 1.050 / -18 ... PC crashes
*Underspeced GPU configurations with 100 MHz ... PC Crashes
*Used +20 Power Limit ... PC Crashes
*Set fan response time to 2500 in Afterburner .... PC Crashes
*Most of all the combination above together too ... PC Crashes

The only thing that did work is DDU the drivers off and install Crimson 16.7.1, activate Compatibility Mode, Power Limit +20, everything else default. I played for a couple of hours: Doom 2016, World of Tanks, World of Warships, Minecraft with shaders. No crashes so far.

But I am still worried and wondering if I should return the GPU to Amazon. Are there any RX 480 models out there that are not so unstable ? I would prefer to stay with AMD because I want to upgrade to Ryzen this year.

>.> a cpu would not care what kind of gpu you have

complete specs?

mobo bios/drivers up to date?

cpu temps while gaming?

Ok, complete specs are as fallows:

Intel Core i5 3470 (Not OCed)
Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
2x8GB DDR3 1866MHz HyperX Furry
ADATA SP550 240GB SSD
HGST 1 TB 5400 RPM
Western Digital 200 GB 7200 RPM
Corsair CX500M
Generic PC case
HP L1925 19" 1280x1024 VGA Monitor

The bios for the motherboard is the latest available.

When I play games the temp for the GPU floats between 67c and 70C with default fan and temperature control. The CPU stays at 60C because it has the stock cooler on it.

I didn't have this issue with my Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 before making the switch.

the psu is suspect, not a good unit especially if its the older version

can you test the card in someone else's system?
