Hello Folks,

Just as it says. My XFX Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 hit a maximum temperature of 102'C while playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag just a few ago. Now, I am nowhere near an expert. But. I am guessing this is a HUGE temperature for the card to handle?

Here are my specs according to GPU-Z:

IDLE:

GPU Core Clock: 300Mhz.
GPU Memory Clock: 150Mhz
GPU Temp: 26'C
Fan Speed: 37%
Fan Speed (RPM): 982 RPM.
GPU Load: 0%
VDDC: 0.825V

Now, for the whopper:

WHILE PLAYING AC BLACK FLAG:

GPU Core Clock: 1000 Mhz
GPU Memory Clock: 1200 Mhz
GPU Temperature: 102'C
Fan Speed: 96%
Fan Speed (RPM): 1009 RPM
GPU LOAD: 100%
VDDC: 1.219V.

Now, I have every setting in CCC Set to Default, and have NOT overclocked at all. I have the latest version of CCC (13.9 or 13.11).

If there is an overclock or power control setting or any settings that could help, I would much appreciate the feedback. I can buy another card up to 800$ at the moment. So, I am open to tinkering with the 7870 using any advice you guys can give.

Thank you guys very much for your help and the great help you give overall. !

- Justin.

This doesnt make sense to me. If your fan is at nearly full speed (96%), then the RPM should be higher.

This is your problem.

My HD5830 at 96% is well over 5k RPM.

Hey thank you to both of you for responding!

Jus played about 30 minutes of assassins Creed 4 black flag. In the middle of a pretty big city (lots of rendering), I checked CCC and its info. It is running at the following:
From Left to Right:

Activity: 75%
GPU Clock: 1000Mhz
Memory Clock: 1200Mhz.
Power: 0%
Temp: 97'C
Fan: 90%

As for my options under Gaming and Performance: I have all settings set to defaults CCC came with for my card. If messing with those settings would help, i'd take any advice on them. I have a pretty spacious CoolerMaster Storm case for all my components as well.

If this helps, here is my full system specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3770K @ 3.5Ghz
MoBo: Asus P8H77-V LE
RAM: 1x*GB DDR 3 Vengeance
HDD: 1 500GB (For OS only), 1 2TB HDD for games and such.
OS: Win 8
GPU: XFX Sapphire Radeon HD 7870
Power Supply: XFX PRO 850W PS.

Thank you again, and thanks for the speedy replies!

- Justin.

I knew it. I feel sort of duped because my grandfathers friend told me the same exact thing. He said they were two different brands, but yet the card says XFX and the packaging is saying Sapphire... Thank you for your help guys. And as I wont be getting another 7870, I am looking for a great jump from that and was considering the GTX 780. Is there any suggestions as to a card you guys prefer? Thank you.

- Justin.

Ahh, okay cool. I am glad it was atleast an XFX for sure. I asked our family friend why I did not get it in its original packaging. He told me that he inspects every card he orders just to be safe, so he is going to look into it and replace it for me. Looks like i'll be getting that GTX 780 though lol. Thank you again for all your help.!
