I'm purchasing the Athlon XP 1800+ for use in a new system. I'm very impressed with the results that the Thermalright SK-6 had with the T-Bird 1.4, and would like to use it with the XP processor. The only concern I have is this: First what is a CPU "shim"? Second should I get one for the AMD MP processor as it's the same type as the XP?

Scratch the shim question...I've found out what it's used for. But I do have one more additional question. Thermal compound...to use or not to use? And I guess I should also include that I'm not planning on OCing the CPU. The reason for the HSF is piece of mind in knowing that the life of the processor will be longer and that it won't get anywhere near too hot.

Turn the heat on? Naw...I just leave my computers on.

USE thermal compound, my personal opinion of shims is dont bother, theres a lot of stories of shims that are just a fraction too thick and so cause inadequate cooling, if your careful fitting the hsf then theres no problem, I cant comment on what hsf will or wont work as I dont have an xp, and I'm watercooled.

Next time you wave - use all your fingers

I'm hoping what he really meant was 'which thermal compound to use'.

What's that PvP strip where Francis overclocks a video card, and it burns though the case/desk/floor/downstairs-office?

Rich is the nation that has many war heroes. Long since forgotten...
