New Egg has the Athlon 64 2.8 for $174. Is this a good choice for a gaming
system?

Is the Athlon 64 2.8 faster than a Athlon XP 3.2 in gaming benchmarks?

I would pair this with NewEggs Gigabyte Nforce3-250 $99 motherboard.

It's probably not dissimilar:

That shows an XP3000+ for comparison.

Of course, having the 754 board will allow you to upgrade to faster chips
than a socket A board will ever allow.

Not a bad board (one of the K8NS range), but the MSI K8N Neo scores a little
better in the benchmarks.

I suspect a BIOS revision or two should close that gap somewhat.
