Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsnt.domain (More info?)
I have set up a new domain for our company. Before we had 2 different
domains which caused some troubles when connections had to be made cross the
domains. They also were rather small. The new PDC is located on a new
Windows 2003 server. The server which was the PDC for the other domain is
now a BDC. The domain servers are on different subnets (using different IP
number series and net mask).
Joining the new domain went smooth in the net where the PDC resides. From
the other network (connected with a 2 Mbps line) things didn't quite as
smooth. The old and newer Win2000 machines found the new domain but the
brand new WinXP Pro machines could not. No matter what I did they could not
find or connect to the new domain even though I could see the server in the
Windows Network Neighbourhood.
The only way to resolve this was to physically move the machines to the
network where the PDC resides. Of course I had to change the IP address etc
but then I had no trouble connecting to and joining the new domain. After
that I changed the IP address back and went back to our sister company with
the machines. Logging on to the new domain seems to work fine.
So why do I have this trouble? Is XP requiring a faster connection or
something? Is there a shorter timeout somewhere which causes this? If it was
the hardware one would expect the old machines to have problem but they are
the ones working best in this case...
