XP + DVD-ROM = CD-ROM?

XP recognizes my DVD-ROM as CD-ROM
I upgraded my dell ME to XP home edition.
Now everything is fine except samsung SD-612D DVD-ROM is shown as an
ordinary CD-ROM drive on my computer.
I have samsung CD-RW with nero working fine on drive E: and samsung
DVD-ROM on drive F:.
On properties,it shows samsung SD612D and enabled and working fine but
it;s shown as an ordinary CD-ROM drive on my computer.
When I insert DVD disc and green light on DVD keeps blinking and
nothing pops up. When I try to explore,it says please insert a disc on
F:.
I installed CD-RW a year ago and DVD-ROM came with the system.They all
worked fine until I upgraded ME to XP.
WinDVD came with the system was not working with XP so I had to buy
WinDVD 5.5 for XP.

I did update firmware to samsung DVD-ROM.It appears to be version 5 is
latest issued on 2000.

I did have winDVD 5.5 for XP and installed it and uninstall it and
reinstall it.

I am totally lost. Is there anyway I can make XP recognizes my DVD-ROM
as DVD-ROM on my computer?

Hi,

Boot in safe mode and log in as administrator.
Go to device manager and uninstall the DVD drive as well as the CD/RW drive, then shutdown the machine.
Unplug the AC power cord and open the chassis.
Disconnect the IDE connectors as well as the power cables for both optical drives.
Set the jumpers of the DVD drive as master and the CD/RW as slave (always connect the fastest drive as master to improve overall performance. If you connect the CD/RW as master, the maximum speed of the DVD drive is limited to the maximum speed of the CD/RW if you are using a 40 Pin IDE cable).
Re-connect the IDE cables and power cables for both drives.
Make sure the DVD drive is connected as master and the CD/RW as slave.
Close the chassis and replug the AC power cord.
Boot into BIOS and check the Secondary IDE channels.
Make sure the DVD rom is appeared as secondary master and the CD/RW is slave.
Enable DMA mode in BIOS for the secondary IDE channels then save and exit.
Windows should start and detect the new hardwares and install the drivers.
Go to device manager and check the DVD and CD/RW drivers. They should be recongnized correctly and work properly.
Double click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers then double click the Secondary IDE channel.
Click the Advanced Settings tab, enable DMA mode for drive 0 and drive 1 respectively, click OK.
The DVD drive should be Ultra DMA mode 5 and the CD/RW is Ultra DMA mode 2 or MW DMA mode 2 (depends on the CD/RW speed; for older model, it may be PIO mode 4 or less)
Reboot the machine.

I had a similar thing happen when I upgraded from 98 to XP. The good news
is that it can be fixed. The bad news is that it may cost a few bucks.

In my case, the DVD-player that came with 98 was incompatible with XP. In
fact, the (free) Microsoft Ugrade Advisor warned me of this problem. It is
a bit late now, but did you download and run the Advisor before doing the
upgrade? If not, here is waht I learned about my PC, which may help you:

1. Pre-XP DVD-players, most or all of them, are incompatible with XP. No
one seems to offer a free upgrade. And, since these players are not
Microsoft products, Bill Gates washes his hands. The good news is that now
many vendors offer software DVD players for XP. Most are available as
standalone software, but some come with DVD readers and DVD writers. Unless
you want to upgrade from a reader to a writer, think about buying a
standalone player. I am happy with one called Power DVD.

2. Moving past the DVD issue, there are a couple of other potential
"gottchas" in an upgrade to XP, epecially if you did not run and heed the
Advisor:

2a. Essentially all anti-virus software pre-XP must be uninstalled, and an
an appropriate version re-installed. Even if the software is XP compatible
(e.g., Norton 2002 or later), it must be re-installed fresh under XP. This
is also true of system-level programs, like Norton Utilities. This advice
probably applies to Mcaffee, too. The reason for the un-install/re-install
is that this class of software senses the operating system and installs
different routines, depending on the OS. This advice applies to other
low-level utilities like registry cleaners, disk partitioning software,
backup software that runs within windows, etc. Ceck with the software
vendor for compatibility, patchs, and whether you must un-insall/re-install,
or upgrade.

2b. Essentially all CD & DVD burning software pre-XP must be uninstalled,
and an an appropriate version re-installed. Again, this is true even if the
software is XP comparible or XP-patchable (e.g., Easy CD Creator version 5.)
This advice probably applies to Nero as well. I personally found Easy CD
Creator version 5 plus patches a bit buggy, until I got to patch 5.35 or so.
However, version 6 works fine with its latest patch.

2c. Outlook, not Outlook Express but the full Outlook, version 97 or 98, is
incompaible with XP. Yes, this is a Microsoft product. No, they don't have
a free upgrade. However, the Outlook that comes with Office XP or later is
compatible with XP. (I lost Outlook 98, but am living fine with the free
Outlook Express that come with XP.)

2d. Some DOS (or Win31) games won't play under XP.

DVD's require software.. it doesn't matter that XP sees it as a cd drive..
obtain PowerDVD or WinDVD to enable your DVD player..

One additinal piece of information: In my case, after upgrading to XP, my
DVD drive could still read data DVDs, written in Joliet format, even though
it could not play movies until I bought a new DVD-player. If you have such
a data DVD, you might want to test your reader. Note that a DVD made by
"drag&drop" is probably UDF format, not Joliet format, and may not be
readable.

My better half and I just want to share our experience with an annoying problem. We too had the situation where Nero was seeing DVDs as CDs on our XFX NForce 680i LT SLI motherboard based computer. Here's how we resolved it.

We have another Window XP computer in which Nero correctly sees DVDs, so we decided to compare the DVD driver files in both Device Managers. The XFX computer had one extra driver file, GEARAspiWDM.sys. Doing some research online, we discovered this file appears as a result of installing iTunes 8. We suspected this was the problem. See Ed Bott's article at http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/an-inside-look-at-apples-sneaky-itunes-8-upgrade/536. (FYI, Ed Bott reports Apple has issued a revised download for iTunes 8 intended to correct past problems.)

We decided to take the extreme route and reinstalled Windows XP (we recently reinstalled Windows XP because of malware and viruses). After that Nero correctly saw DVD discs. Again people prove the Internet is a conduit for shedding light on issues. Thanks.
