XP Hardware Changes

I've heard that XP will only allow 10 hardware changes then lock up (forcing you to buy a new version!).

Is this true? I make about 5 changes per week - and if this is the case running Win is going to be expensive. Maybe just stick with 2000?

I can't see that anyone is actually going to buy the operating system if this is the case. I think I'll perminantly stick to Linux from now on :)

Microsoft is also putting in an anti-piracy program so you have to call Microsoft every time you want reinstall XP and tell them why you are reinstalling.

I won't upgrade if that is what they are going to do. With all the things I have and do on my computer, it crashes often and I don't have the time to screw around with Microsoft Tech support to make sure I'm not stealing.

This is going to be a very restricted OS and it will not gel well with expert computer users. Big mistake for Microsoft!

Here in the UK it's a nightmare and costs a fortune to dial MS. I know people who waited an hour at national, or even international rate. It's just awful.

Hopefully they'll upgrade their tec support lines, although I wonder if they'll spend more than they save just setting things up :)

I totally appreciate that post. I won't bother upgrading Win2k in the future. I guess I better start learning to use Unix/Linux now, so I don't get left behind.......

There is a very small chance Microsoft could take that out of the final shipping version since it is getting a lot of controversy. Of course this anti-piracy policy is just a way to make sure Bill Gates is getting all the money he deserves. But he is making computer users feel limited and restricted and expert computer users don't like to feel that way.

What's the betting that M$ will discontinue support for Win2000 / WinME six months after the release of XP?

I can already hear them saying it - « I'm sorry, DirectX 14.5 does not work with the older kernel of Pre-XP operating systems ». Curses to the good ship Microsoft and all who sail in her.

Microsoft has a lot of balls to start anti-piracy campaigns with a break up order on appeal. But Microsoft will probably discontinue support for the Windows 9x kernal immeadiatly after XP debuts. But they would have to really make a lot of changes in order to get Windows 2000 out of users machines because that is what XP is based on. It is basically Windows 2000 with better compatibility and easier to use. The only other difference is cosmetics because under the hood it deals with the same kernal, code, and technology.

Linux on the other hand is starting to sound better everyday. And some of the future versions are expected to be more user friendly. Linux is a great OS but a pain in the ass to install, configue and troubleshoot. But performance and productivity wise it is a lot better than even Win2K; but it's compatibility is awful. If you can't install Win2k, forget about Linux for now.

Yeah, so XP is based on Win2000, but what difference has that ever made to microsoft support decisions? Win98 is based on Win95 but they're still dropping support for 95 (even OSR2+)...

Linux on the other hand is starting to sound better everyday.

I'm with ya there man! I'm dual booting to Linux Mandrake (Redhat+), and my system is hand-crafted to be absolutely compatible. I have started to see companies offering linux options for end-users pre-installed and not just on the servers too, even stuff on laptops. Hopefully, Linux will mature in the next few years enough to give MS a big slap in the .net's and make them wake up and remember the concept of an operating system :)

There's no getting around Linux; it's used in universities like a drug.

But I hear most hardware developers (nvidia, ati) don't like the open source standard, because they give the competition and 'edge'. So it's up to everyone else to write drivers.

i wondering what's with the fact that they are not going to make it usb2 compatable

luckly i'm going to start using linux next year so atleast i'll have an idea how to use when they mathc microsoft for compatiblity to parts

I can not believe it won't support USB2. Several manufactures are starting to sell hardware in USB and now Microsoft refuses to support it.

XP is sounding worse with everyday that goes by.

Now XP is getting even more worse. There are rumors that the new XP version will not support MP3 files since Microsoft believes it promotes piracy. So if any of your games use any form of MP3 files for sound...they won't work with XP. XP will also not support any media players based on MP3 technology. So MusicMatch and Sonic Foundry's Jukebox won't work. The only 3 players that will work is Windows media player, Quicktime and Real Networks player.

Now it's starting to sound like a monopoly. But keep in mind these are rumors. Microsoft is begging for users to run out and buy Linux. I won't upgrade to XP...that's all.

Actually, this is a quote from good ol' George W. Bush. Visit Dubya Says for more amusing (and some astoundingly worrying) quotes from the greatest Repbulican President of all time! (sarc) :)
