XP Home has had weird problems ever since it was reinstalled

There were major problems with my PC a year ago so I had to do Windows
Recovery. Ever since there have been problems with different aspects of the
OS. A major problem is that my McAfee and other antivirus software that I
have used cannot run a live update for some reason.
Also, some programs will not install at all and come up with an error
message about the path to the directory or something.
Another thing is that programs sometimes don't work. So every time I restart
my PC I am worried that something new won't work.
If anyone has any ideas of what I could do to fix this it world be
appreciated.

Backup your important files and Do a clean install.
