XP installation help req.

Here's my current spec:

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Athlon XP 3200 @ 2200MHz
1 GB PC3200 DDR
Nvidia GeForce 6600GT
60 GB IDE hard disk
Windows ME, fully updated

Here's what I what to do:

install 200 GB Maxtor SATA drive
format and partition above drive
install new (OEM) copy of XP on above drive
copy some data from old drive onto new
remove IDE drive for use in another system

Is this even possible? Can I boot ME and format / partition the new
drive this way, or do I need to do it from a floppy? Will I need to
install SATA drivers before any of this, and if so, can I do this
through ME?

Of course, I will make backups of important data on the old drive before
starting any of this.

Your Asus board has the SATA interface so you should not need any
special drivers.

Here is how I would do it:

1. Unplug the existing hard drive - both data and power cables.
2. Install and connect up the SATA drive.
3. Start up the computer and boot from the Windows XP Installation
CD. That will partition and format the new drive as a single NTFS
partition if you use the defaults.
4. When Windows XP is fully installed and functioning on the new
drive use the Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to create
a wizard diskette for use on your old hard drive.
5. Disconnect the SATA drive, reconnect the IDE drive, and boot back
into Windows Me. Run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard from the
diskette and save the results in a folder named \Transfer on the 60 gb
hard drive.
6. When FASTW is finished reconnect the SATA drive and leave the IDE
drive connected. Make sure that the boot priority in the BIOS setup is
configured for the SATA drive as first boot choice.
7. Boot into Windows XP and run the Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard to import the saved data from the \transfer folder on the 60 gb
hard drive.

Follow up to Ron's post.

For XP to be able to see all of the 200GB sata drive you must be using XP
SP1 or later. The original version of XP like Win Me is limited to
"seeing" or rather using a maximum of 137GB.

AFAIK the OEM version of XP I've ordered has SP2 included.

Just a thought.........if yours is an "update" version of XP.........have
your Win98 or Win Me disk handy for authentication, XP update ver will ask
for it.

What will the 'FASTW' do that I can't obviously envisage now? I've never
heard of this wizard before. I've very little XP experience, hence
asking here, rather than the XP NG.

Heirloom, Microsoft calls it the "Upgrade" version, typically in the small
box at the upper right of the front of the CD box, along with the OS
versions it will upgrade.
