picked up cheap 2nd hand pc (big mistake) half of memory full. have
uninstalled all programs not used done, defrg ran various cleaners, all have
made very little difference. Think best to reinstall window from backup disks
after wiping drive but not sure how to do as cpmplete newbie...any advice

All have made very little difference in what? You don't state the problem.

What backup disks? Was this a user made backup, are these recovery disks
provided with the computer, did you receive an actual XP CD with the
computer? Do you have all the disks necessary to reinstall the applications
you do wish to keep as formatting will wipe the drive entirely, losing
everything on it.

Do you own a retail copy of XP that is not in use on another computer?
