XP Pro crashed and the following message displays:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\system32\config\system

I am not able to do a repair, 'r' (for repair) it is not an option.
I am not able to do a recovery- when I get to the prompt I have tried to do
the following:

Use the instructions in the website
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for attempts at
repair/recovery. I tried to create a temp folder and copy files, I have tried
to access the bootcfg, I tried to do a chkdsk at which I am stopped becuase
"the volume contains one or more unrecoverabel problems."

I am at a stand still and would like to know if there are anymore tips or
tricks I might be able to use.

Thanks for reading this and any help you have to offer.

This is a critical Windows registry file. See How to recover from a
corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

This procedure cannot be used with OEM Windows versions, which often rules
it, requiring a reinstall if you have no backup. Be sure to run a chkdsk /r
as this is sometimes the result of a hard disk problem.

I am unable to copy files, they do not exist. The information in the link
does not work.

I have begun the chkdsk /r, it is still running- if the sector is not usable
are there additional steps that can be explored?

Thank you for your insights.
