XP Won't Let Me Log On After Computer Name Change! Help Pls

Hello:

I went into system properties, wgilethere, changed the computer name, it
asked me to re-boot abd noiw I can't log on. As far as I know it was only set
up as a workgroup and not a domain.; This is one PC and is used at home. I am
currently on an old HD that I installed on the same machine with XP and I can
see and access my current HD (the one that I can't log on to), but I want it
back the way it was, I have all of my prog's installed there, etc etc. Plus
want that HD as my Master and my existing Slave is not connected since I have
this one on here right now. Can I not just copy a security file from this
newly installed copy of XP into the correct folder on my other HD to reset
the GP?

I know there has got to be something I can do just don't know what! I don't
want to try to install over my existing XP with the chance of losing
everything, have already installed over it twice before.

Was this machine part of a domain? If so does the Admin account allow you to
login? Have you tried using Remote Desktop Connection from another PC?

No, Admin or my other login, both admin's will not let me log in. Just asks
for my password. I have tried all pw's that I have had in the past that I
know of. What xcould the pw possibly be and where would the machine generate
another pw on it's own like that?

As far as I know, no it was not part of a domain, but I also can't anser that
for sure 100%. No, I don't have access to another PC remotley.

Try booting into Last Known Good Configuration. Do this by repeatedly
tapping F8 as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the
right menu. Let us know.

Hi Malke,

I did to no avail. I've tried that, using a blank password, all of my old
pw's. Just stumped right now, only thing I know I could do would be to do a
repair with MS Recovery Console, but, I would need to enter an admin password
for that too. RConsole would be my last resort.

I honestly don't know what you did. You can't have just renamed the
computer; I've done that lots of times and have never seen the effects
you are reporting. It sounds like you created a domain account instead.
I'm sorry I was unable to help you. Maybe you can find a local
professional who can take a look at the machine and figure it out.

Ok, so is it time for me to disregard your sig about my current panic state
of mind? ) Oh boy. Well, I am quite PC literate and build websites, etc but
not with domains, etc. I still don't know what they are for, etc. Anyway,
that must of been what happened, a domain. On the Welcome Screent, he lower
left corner shows (Turn Off Loft Office) as if I were going to log off and
also shows my two login names minus one for my wife since it was turned off
at the time. I twoo have changed 'puter names many times and this has never
happened to me.

You know what, I just went back to properties to try and remember what I
did. It was late, many hours working and I was pretty tired. I renamed the
Computer Description. THEN, I clicked the bottom button "Change..." which
comes after the "To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change.

THAT's what I did....I only read what I wanted to read (rename this pc). Ok,
with that said and done what does this mean? I remember it immediatley
popping up stating it needed a reboot, which I did. If I legitimatley clicked
change then what should of happened?

You've got two threads for this subject going on in two different
newsgroups. You've gotten the correct answer in the other newsgroup. If
you have forgotten where you posted, use Google Groups Advanced Search
and search for your name. Next time, don't multipost.

Briefly, boot the computer with NTpasswd, make the local Administrator
account password a blank, log in to the *local* Administrator account.
Now remove the domain connection. It would be smart to make another
local user account while you're there.

Hi,

You could try this.....Never tried it myself but remember it from a
while ago.

Login to your OLD installation of Winxp. Go to

<MAIN windows folder>\system32\

That is the windows folder for the system you cannot log in to.

Find a program called LOGON.scr. Rename it (e.g. LOGON.SCR.bck) and
back it up to a safe location.

In the same folder find a program called CMD.exe and make a copy of
it. Rename the copied CMD.exe to LOGON.SCR.

Reboot your computer to your MAIN windows install. When the logon
screen appears go have a cup of tea..... or whatever.... Basically you
must wait for the screensaver to be activated. This should take about 15
mins. Obviously, dont use keyboard or move mouse while you are waiting!

Once the screensaver activates, Windows should load the CMD.exe
program instead of the LOGON.SCR program (because of the changes
outlined above). You should now have a command prompt with full access
to your MAIN windows install.

I think the following command will reset the administrator password.

net user administrator 123456

You should now be able to reboot a final time and login with user
ADMINISTRATOR and password 123456.

Finally, recover the saved LOGON.SCR file back to its original location.
