XP Won't Shut Down

When I choose the "Turn Off' option when shuting down my computer it just reboots. It used to shut down just fine until I installed some Windows updates and Easy Cd Creator.

I tried uninstalling everything but the problem remains. Anybody ever see this before?

Once or twice.

If I had a dollar for every time that someone mentioned on a message board that they had installed Easy CD Creator and began to have problems, I could split it with Tom, pay off the forum bandwidth for a year, and buy a nice island in the Aegean where I could retire!

According to the Roxio Knowledge Base:

Personally, I think any product that requires an entire message board to support the product has too many problems for someone who wants a stable operating system configuration.

If you want a decent software burning program for your CD-RW, then I highly suggest taking a good look at <A HREF="http://www.nero.com/en/index2.htm" target="_new">Nero</A>.

Of course, it is also possible that one of the updates obtained from the Windows Update site has caused a problem, and the majority of those updates cannot be uninstalled, even if they are listed in Add/Remove Programs. If you didn't set a System Restore Point before the installations, your best bet might be to format the partition and install a fresh copy of the operating system.

When using the Windows Update Website, inspect each patch and update very carefully, as the site occasionally makes a mistake, and may install the wrong drivers for a device, such as your IDE controller. That isn't to say that you can't use the site ... it just means you must be intelligent and cautious about the downloadable files recommended on the site for your system. And settting a Restore Point in advance is a good idea, IMHO.

Well somebody phone Roxio and let them know their product works just great with XP... I've installed EasyCD Creator on a few machines with RW drives and haven't had any problems getting it to work. The only problem was with DirectCD and an update fixed that as well.

BINGO!

That was it. I was using Easy CD Creator 4 and it's uninstall routine isn't worth [-peep-]. Not to mention the fact that these guys have no idea how to design patches. The only thing more painful than updating Easy CD Creator 4 was uninstalling it!

XP COMMUNITY MEMBERS TAKE NOTICE!
Easy CD Creator 4 and below should be avoided like a virus. Seriously!

I've used both Easy CD Creator and Nero extensively. IMHO, the Roxio software is crap in comparison to Nero ... and Nero has no issues at all with newer operating systems.

Check out Nero, Zoron ... and you may change your mind. As far as I'm concerned, the Roxio package is for new users who are unfamiliar with how to burn a CD, and the Nero software is for power users who want greater flexibility and more control over the final results.

You can print prettier labels with the Roxio program, but that's about the only advantage I can think of over Nero. And since I don't bother to label my CD's, in order to keep them balanced, that pretty much negates that particular aspect of the program for me.

Nero rarely requires troubleshooting, too ... which is a major plus in my book. Easy CD Creator, on the other hand, without immediate updating, can cause unnecessary problems. And how many new users navigate to a manufacturer's website to check for software issues before a program installation?

Not many.

The only reason I use Roxio and not Nero is because I've had only positive experiences with the product. It does what I need to do when I need it (which isn't that often) and that's all I can expect from a piece of software. I admit Nero is superior in many ways... but I haven't had the need to use it. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones when it comes to EasyCD Creator 5... I don't know.
