Hello everyone

I have a Dell XPS 8500 which supports an i7 3770, 16gb 800mhz RAM, Raedeon 7870 and a few other bits.

I've used this PC since I bought it in 2012 for gaming and work but feel like now might be the right time to upgrade. Would I be better to add a new GPU (somewhere around the 2060 mark) to let me game at 1440p - 4k, or should I just get a brand new system?

I'm looking to maybe flog the computer online for a few hundred pounds which might go towards the new system.

Currently playing games at 1440p 60fps fish but they're all sat at the lowest settings.

Solution
picking part of pc itself is better for cheaper purpose with the same specs, but if you want an instant one thats a better choice.

Here i tried my best to adjust the build with your budget:

It's better to get a brand new system because there's a lot to gain from a new CPU, RAM and motherboard. But you could get a new GPU earlier and use it while you wait for the right moment to upgrade. I think a Ryzen or Intel 10th gen would both be great upgrades from your current one.

Here's a comparison between your current PC vs. new GPU only vs. brand new PC (scroll all the way down to the charts).
That website may not take into account the actual speeds of RAM and whatnot, so the differences may be a bit different than in reality.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like my PC is super down on performance compared to current specs haha.

I have between 1-1,500£ to spend in total. So I'm looking for best bang for buck setup. I'm in Scotland too.

Im on PC Parts picker now and a 5700 xt seems a much better buy than the 2070 super on price and performance

I have just found a pc with following specs at £1379:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Intel Core i7-9700F (8 Core), 3.0 GHz (4.7 GHz Max Turbo)
  • 16 GB (2x 8 GB), DDR 4, 2666 MHz (HyperX) Ram
  • 512 GB Solid State Drive (M.2 SSD) + 2 TB SATA
  • 8 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
Is this a good price for the system? It is a 'like new' machine so not brand new but still seems a good steal. Or should i go for a different system which uses Ryzen 3900/3900x with a 5700xt instead?
