I have a DELL XPS 8700 with i7 4th gen CPU and a 660 ti GPU. I am looking to upgrade my pc either by buying parts or a new computer. Is it worth buying parts like a 3070 and a i7 12th gen CPU or do I also need to upgrade the motherboard. Is it smarter and easier to just buy a new pc?

FYI: I am pretty bad at computer hardware.

Help is much appreciated!

Being a Dell, you will want a whole new PC. Dell is known for proprietary parts. Additio ally, anything left in there is old and outdated. Even the case and power connection are proprietary and unusable. With the poor airflow I can't think why anyone would want to try.

It would be better to start from scratch than to try and upgrade that Dell.

That speaks to a whole new PC.
There is little you could keep from the Dell.
