My tv has a set of combined rca/component input jacks. They are the only input besides two hdmi. We have a vcr/dvd combo. We use the vcr to record from our satillate box(to cheap for dvr). The vcr currently conects to the tv via rca/composite jacks. The dvd part does the same. However, the dvd part has the option to use component output instead of the rca. The vcr wont output through the compnent though. I was wondering if I bought a rca male to two female y cable to connect both to my tv. I would connect the audio and red and blue to the correct jacks and connect the yellow and green to the y cable. This way we could watch the dvd in high quality but still use the vcr when needed withour unplugging cables

You can't combine the composite and component to one cable. Composite divides the signal into 3 streams which is how it can run HD resolution on that bandwidth. Component has the picture, color and brightness info in one stream. If you try to merge 3 into one with just a splitter you will either get static, or possible a black/white image or maybe some bright colors with no image, something not good for sure.

Yes, I am aware of that. I meant is it possible to have two devices connected to one set of shared component and composite jacks. My tv only has one set that is a combined component and composite. The yellow and greeen are the same jack and the tv reqonizes if either a component or composite are plugged into it. My vcr/dvd combonation has both component and composite outputs but the vcr will not output through the component only the dvd but the dvd will output through the composite. I though i could connect both sets to my tv so the dvd's wouyld be in hd. I would connect all the wires except the yellow and greeen to the correct jacks than plug the yellow and green into the y splitter than into the tv. This way when the dvd/vcr combo is set to vcr it will output tto the tv via the composite(when tv is set to it) and when it is on dvd it will go to the component(also when tv is set) . this way i wouldnt have to unplug any wires when needing to use something.

I can't picture what you are trying to do, especially since you are going by colors instead of what the cables actually are and what inputs are on the TV. I don't know how the TV can have a combined set for both inputs since the single video cable of composite does not have a match for the three component uses. They maybe use a combo audio jack for both, but not video.

You can just wire the thing how you are thinking and see if it works unless you can post pictures of what you have and the connections they have.
