Y-Splitter makes mic quality significantly worse?

Just got a Male-Female adapter for my V-Moda Mic, but it makes my mic sound distorted, and choppy? People say its like I'm talking through glass. Any help?

If this is really a Y-splitter, the output signal is affected by the signal source connected to the "other" leg of the Y.
