Y2K3 mod help - Llaumax exe

The Y2K3 mod has this little (less than 200 kb) exe file that is supposed to
ramp up the way OFP night skies look. It's a quickie, and I like the new
Y2K3 mod, so I downloaded it to my desktop.

Now, I can't delete the doggone thing. I keep getting an error "Cannot
delete llaumax-h20: It is being used by another person or program. Close
any programs that might be using the file and try again."

The problem is--I've got everything closed. Nothing is open. No program is
running.

Does anybody here have any advice on getting rid of this thing off my
desktop?

Thanks,

C.

restart?
Or look in the processes section of the task bar and kill it, but a
restart is best.

Naw, I tried that first thing. It didn't work. I can re-boot, then try to
delete the little ah heck, and it just sticks there like stink on shi... er,
well, you know.

The processess section of the task bar? It's on my desk top. What are you
referring to?

Had a similar prob the other day, I needed solution 4 (though no doubt
someone will post telling me a more obvious way!)

1. Reboot and try to delete it
2. Reboot into safe mode (press F8 just after POST) then try to delete it
3. Boot with a DOS disk and do through DOS (if your HD is FAT formatted)
4. Boot with program like NTFSDOS Pro that'll let you do the same with an
NTFS drive

I actually have three of these little buggers. I downloaded all three to
the desktop, and I was able to move two of them (I tried to download the
file a couple of times). Now, I can't even move or re-name them because the
computer thinks they're "in-use".

Boy, I hope someone knows an easier way.

I just noticed something--all three of the programs have a different size.
They're real small--like 38.7 kb, 39.9 kb, and 40.0 kb (that's what I see if
I right click and check properties for Size.) But, I notice, on all three,
that the Size on Disk is 48.0 kb.

Weird. I'm thinking that the whole program did not download (I'm sure I saw
that the program was something like 150 kb). I'm thinking I only got a
piece of it--yet, it's there on the desktop, and I can't delete them.

I'm going to try some of your suggestions, but if anyone knows of an easy
way to get these off my desktop, please let me know.

They all use the same space as hard disk space is divided into smaller
sections called clusters. A file takes up a number of clusters rather
than the size it actually is. Only one file or part of file can be in
any given cluster. If a file is smaller than a cluster then the space is
wasted. In your case they all take the same disk space since 48k must be
the next highest cluster size multiple for each file. Open a command
prompt and type chkdsk, once it's finished it'll report the size of each
allocation unit aka a cluster.

For what it's worth, I often have this happen. It always seems to be
with .exe's. Sometimes running a disk scan at Windows startup will sort
it. Other times booting into another separate install of Windows XP 64
bit will allow it to be removed without complaint.

Good luck nevertheless.

Task manager, pardon me, it was a bit early....

I tried using the task manager. It doesn't show up as a running program.

Drat, foiled again.

I was able to take one of the three off, though. I deleted it right after a
re-boot as the icons on my desktop were loading. The other two wouldn't
budge, but at least one of them is gone.

Now, there were two...

Try alt-tab-del and see if it is in the running processes.

Yeah, tried that--not there. Damn.

Thanks, though.

According to the link I found it should be 2.76Mb, if it's the same one.
http://www.edgefiles.com/files/16173.html

You could try downloading it again to your desktop, overwriting the one
that's there.

That's how I got three of them in the first place. I thought I'd just
overwrite them--but I ended up with three. It was strange to see three
exe's on my desktop, all of them named the exact same name. They didn't
overwrite on top of each other--they show up as separate programs.

I guess this is possible because they're all different sizes.

I think I'll try that again, though. Good idea.

If the "delete in safemode" does not work you could try to create some
empty txt documents on your desktop, select the txt files and the exe
and delete all of them together. This sometimes works. Deleting in safe
mode should work too though.

OK, I use this program above to find out where the lock up is coming from.
It's Windows Explorer.

I'm not sure I know how to proceed now that I know this.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Probably depends on your motherboard manufacturer. With mine, after it's
done it's POST routine, if I tap F8 a few times I get a menu with various
boot options like safe mode, safe mode with networking etc. Check your
motherboard manual or manufacturers website in case it's a different key for
you.

If you want that program I mentioned before, email me and I'll send it you.
It's two self expanding floppy images. Mind the spam trap in my address if
you email.

HTH

PS. Just installed that sky pack myself, very nice!

Maybe a system restore might be in order. Go back maybe two or three days,
see if that helps.

I was just about to do that when--

I ended up downloading the program a second time into a new folder. Then, I
copied the program to my desktop, rewriting the old stuck program. Then,
rebooted. And, after all that, I was able to delete them.

All those pesky buggers are gone!

Thanks to everyone for their help (especially the poster who suggested this
fix).

Best,

C.

Going into safe mode is a windows thing, it has nothing at all to do
with the bios.

It turns out, on my XP machine, you've got to run msconfig to go into safe
mode. It's not on the "start-->turn off" like it used to be.
