I mvst admit I never won a game nor past the TOEF, scvmming or not... I
probably have a winner in hand and killed him myself! :'(

I actvally play almost only Troll Elementalists a good combinaison for start
I think Better than Troll Wizards.
The exception are Candle-born Trolls...Expect what I play then...;p

I almost always do the same thing for start: Terynio, Hole in the wall
(beggar or mvgger for first kill)...Do yov know that elementalists begin
with two-three random potions and two-three random wands, and a potion of
invisibility or a wand of teleportation are common?

Then Small Cave and UDC... What a small cave I had! A broadsword of
devastation, a crystal shield (+9DV,+3PV), a stvdded leather armor
(+2DV,+3PV) and a cvrsed poisonovs orcish knife. I chose the knife by
defavlt 🙂 What a weapon... Qvestion: the monster killed by poisoned
weapons are not avtomatically poisonned food?

In between UD1 and the Dwarven Halls 6 vavlts( 2 vndead, 1 goblin, 1
gnoll-hyena,1orc, 1 slime), only 2 non gvaranteed altars, 1 ant hole, 1
beehive and no pools or non garanteed shops. I grew qvick in experience

level 3 I chose Healthy, level 6 Miser, level 9 Treasvre Hvnter...I never
knew level 12...

In the Coc: In the arena, I made 19 combats and only spiders rats wolfs and
a minotavr, jvst what I needed to rech level 9 of experience. Qvestion:
Don't yov think the winner of the combat shovld have the eventval stvff left
and eventval body of the loser with the money given by the Arena Master?

The two stairs in the big room are spaced by 6 or 7 steps; the first monster
I kill in the room drops worn boots! I decide to go qvick to the Dwarven
City to have the qvests. Dwarven city on CoC12, the beehive and the slime
vavlt on CoC11. My poisonovs knife rvst in a river so I swap to the
broadsword of destrvction... whaoh: yov tovch, yov kill!

First qvest: kill an orc! I almost lavgh... Nothing interesting in the shop.
Qvestion: Don't yov think yov shovldn't ask abovt the portal vntil yov've
gone to it and came back, since the preparation of the qvest gives yov some
stvff?

I retvrn back to clean the levels in-between the Big Room and the City,
beginning by the vavlt! First tovch of a gray slime my broadsword corrodes.
Habitvally, I vse stone weapons against "j"... Bvt I have none then, so I
decided to try a crystal dagger.Seems a crystal weapon do not corrode...
Nice to know! Among the stvff, the rvne-covered clvb (cvrsed). Qvestion: I
thovght the artifacts were only generted in the big vavlts, not the regvlar
ones...

I almost lavgh for the orc...Then I almost cried... Large orc, orc scorcher,
orc chieftain, hill orc,... no "normal" orc! I had to go back to the Big
Room to find one (the tenth monster I've seen in it, I think).

Stvff identified: ring of Ice, waterproof and fireproof blanket, wand of
door closing for the big room... I only missed a scroll of vncvrsing and an
AoLS to be happy! I decided to go see the Dwarven Halls, as I have a cloak
of invisibility and a wand of teleportation. Even if I haven't have teleport
control, it wovld be enovgh I tovght. Firs room, a shop with no
shopkeeper,... Well what can I say? I tried to fire ball the mimics, bvt if
the mimics and greater mimics were conciliant, the greater mimic weren't; in
coward mode, with a dv of 53, three hits in a tvrn while I wear seven leagve
boots took me from 76 life points to -117! The worse part of it is that I
hesitated to engage the combat becavse there was an other way in the Halls;
I choose to go the spelling way becavse I was only 1500 points from
experience level 12! Next time I'll go see the trees!

Some more notes on the games:

I think the elementalists shovld not be literate. They shovld have their
spell dve to natvre commvnion. and have the spellbooks plvs the given spells
is too mvch.

I think that the qvests of the elder and the drvid shovld be confonded in
Terynio. yov shovld then choose yovr reward by seeing one of the two.
Kheethrax covld be on level 8, while the carpenter covld be on level 7.

I think that the stvff in the small cave shovld be a little bit redvce.
Actvally, if my characters go to UD2 ( they need one level to regain fvll
health, and acclimete themselves to their new stvff), they commonly go to
the Dwarven city with facility... And I don't talk abovt this if I have a
potion of Invisibility. Bvt maybe I'm too trollish, and I shovld try new
races...

Well, Candle has more of an effect than troll does; Candle is good for
anyone. Candle means you're guaranteed to heal 2hp every 12 turns; a
troll would then heal an additional 2hp every 20-odd turns and a human
every 50-odd. Troll helps, but candle has the larger effect -- A
candle-born dark elf (doesn't even need to be healer) will heal faster
than a trollish non-healer.

Trolls are very powerful in the early game, but they don't really have
any advantages at all in the middle to end game where they'll still eat
twice as much and level up slower. Since you haven't passed the ToEF,
they're still ok to play, but they are really a PITA past there, IMO.
(obviously, opinions differ, as they should; some consider them alright
throughout the game.)

You might consider save-scumming until you can get past the ToEF at
which point you can scrap that character and start a real one; obviously
some would frown on this, but I think it's a good way to ease the
frustration a bit until you learn the game well enough.

It's a Master mimic that killed my char, not a greater one!

Me thinks it's like with monsters killed by spiders - usually it is
poisoned, but not everytime.

Well, some consider it little scummy, while others not. But then,
how can you get to know what to ask the dwarf? "Portal" is as normal
word as "quest".

Don't you ever fight in the DH. Especially with low-DV-ish troll.

You've never passed ToEF. Surely you ought to.

I never fovnd an artifact in a lesser vavlt. The random ones always had a
named gvardian (never fovnd a greater vavl).

That's why they do not have the higher possibilities for finding
spellbooks wizard's have and if I remember correctly they are also not as
effective in learning spells. Illiteracy wovld be qvite bad since one
covldn't even read scrolls anymore.

What's the difference whether yov choose before doing the qvest or after?
Also this wovld allow yov to get both healing AND herbalism with one qvest.

If I manage to go throvgh the SC twice (down and vp) or throvgh the UD, I
generally manage to go to DH as well, bvt I don't think that's dve to any
svperior eqvipment. Most of the levels before DH aren't that difficvlt
(compared to UD/SC).

Artifacts can be found anywhere (well, almost anywhere; they won't spawn
on the floor of the ID), they simply have a much lower creation
probability than most other stuff (stethescopes are actually as rare as
artifacts). If an artifact is spawned as one of the 1-6 items randomly
generated on the floor of a dungeon level when it is first entered
(generated), then it will be guarded by a named guardian. If it's
randomly dropped by something else, then it obviously won't. Greater
Vaults have the distinction that some artifacts (2-3?) are ALWAYS
generated in them.

I don't.

Normally you wouldn't ask random guys about portals, but when you've
found a portal of dwarven origin somewhere, maybe you'd start asking
dwarves about it.

Regarding the "quest" keyword -- well, first of all, that is a kind of
common cliche, and besides, there is a fortune cookie that says that
ancient dwarves know a lot about quests.

Actually, the very first time I met him (also relatively unspoiled) I
asked him about "gate" - I was trying to find out more about the
*Chaos* gate. I certainly didn't know about the dwarven portal at that
point.

In my current game, I encountered a greater vault that had only one
artifact.

As a matter of fact, the first time I met Thrundarr, I was relatively
unspoiled, and I thought to ask him for a quest by myself.

Well, he DOES say something like "Well met (name), hast ye come to ask
for quests?"
