Yamaha CD-RW hardware or software problems?

My girlfriend just recently bought a Yamaha CRW2100EZ Internal E-IDE 16X Write/10X Re-Write/ 40X Read CD-RW Drive. At first the performance was excellent, but now when ever she whats to burn audio, she recieves error messages randomly. For ex. she will insert a brand new disc with a compatible speed of 16x and a error will pop up saying" please insert a free space disc. Sometimes it will reach to 99% of the process then a error message will approach ending the process. She burns at the full max speed could this be the problem? Are Yamaha CD-RW's known to do this? Could it be the software easy cd creator 4.02d by adaptec ? There is a firmware update to 104h on the yamaha site and an update for the adaptec software on the roxio site .. hope that helps
