Today I zapped Stone To Flesh at a tombstone and was slightly annoyed
to discover that it did *not* turn it into a slab of meat. (Meatloaf?
Tube of balony? Whatever.)

Yeah, it's not particularly important, but it just seems like something
that should happen, ya know?

Perhaps marble or granite are immune to the effects of stone to flesh?
Makes me wonder if one casts stone to flesh on marble that it would become
pork, granite to beef, sandstone to fish, cement to spam.

But that's neither here nor there. This is definitely an instance where
TDTTOE is not true.

Wait, can you STF a stone wall? Does it 'dig' sort of? I can't remember,
and my Unix machine is down at the moment. Maybe it doesn't affect scenery.

Nein. But casting it at the floor or ceiling has interesting effects.

This would open up all kinds of problems. After all, what would happen
if you cast it at the floor? At a wall? At the ceiling?

I guess it only works on singular entities, not attached to anything
else. If you cast it at a monster carrying a ring, such a ring isn't
changed to a meat ring either, is it?

The former and the latter have been dealt with in the code. Give it a try
in wizmode. The effect isn't lasting but it shows that something did
happen.

Perhaps this should be extended to a similar message when cast
at a wall, though I do think the OP has a good idea about the
spell's interaction with gravestones.

I don't play it any more, and don't know about the messages, but for me
it appears to be logical, that casting stone to flesh on a gravestone
would fail (there is nothing like edible flesh around a grave), and
there would be a message be that goes: "What did you expect? A large T-
bone steak?"

I notice in the code (zap.c) it says:

} else if (u.dz < 0) { /* we should do more... */
pline("Blood drips on your %s.", body_part(FACE));

Given that the devteam thinks there should be more, is there any good
reason not to allow stone to flesh to be used as a primitive "dig"? We
could make it dig just a single square and produce a large chunk of
meat in its place. It wouldn't be terribly useful, except perhaps in a
rare emergency, but it would make sense.

If cast at the ceiling, the meat could fall on you, possibly injuring
you. If cast at the floor, you could call through, and the meat would
come with you.

The only problem I see with this is the possibility of creating much
food out of the dungeon. But then it's not like boulders are in small
supply.

And when you are about to pick it up, your dog would snatch it and have
a loooong feast.
