Does it strike anyone else as appropriate that zapping
a stack of leather items with a wand of undead turning
instead of a wand of polymorph should produce some
random leather-hided monster: leather golem, horse,
pig, goat? This to go along with the "leather golem
should drop the occasional saddle" idea someone else
suggested.

The point being that leather is a "dead thing" and so
should respond to undead turning.

Of course, zapping undead turning at a pile of _rotted_
leather items should produce the corresponding _zombie_
"leather creature".

No. no more than zapping a pile of tins of jackals should produce zombie
jackals.
Leather is more than skin; a number of steps in a process is applied to
the animal product to produce leather. Before you zap a wand of undead
turning at a corpse, do you have to rub salt in the corpse and hang it
out to dry in the sun?

If that were the case, could you then zap a wand of UT at an ex-wood
golem and get a wooden horse?

You climb inside the wooden horse --more--
it's very dark in here--more--
you hear rumblings and squeakings --more--
you climb out of the wooden horse --more--

(Find yourself 'ported to a 'Troy' level with dozens of sleeping
soldiers and loads of loot.)

Xanthian,

Here is the newsgroup FAQ:

http://www.spod-central.org/~psmith/nh/rgrn-FAQ.txt

Please pay special attention to item 2.5, paticularly the paragraphs
headed "Quote trimming:" and "Personal attacks and flames:"

Thank you on everyone's behalf.

I've zapped a big pile of gold with a wand of polymorph and created a
hostile gold golem.

ROFL.

Sometimes instead of getting a wooden horse, you might get a wooden
rabbit.... climbing into the rabbit would be a bad idea....

This would be even more amusing if you were unable to enter the
horse while carrying any sacks, bags, boxes, chests, and suchlike.

The question arises ... how do you get _back_ from this level? Get
on a boat?

Oh, there are.

Money is one of many game features put there
specifically to seduce you into using it the
wrong way, much like candles. Money is good
for buying protection, dicy for shopping
(there are better ways to shop), and deadly
if used for running up the score, it makes
the PC burdened, in large quantities.

That makes it every bit as "useful" in the
end game as a Vorpal sword in the hands of an
opponent on Astral. It's just that "useful to
whom" is "useful to the RNG's attempts to
kill you".

IIRC, gems were "originally" just lightweight
money.

Sounds like a great way to get your treasure to follow you out of
the dungeon without having to carry it.

However, by the time it's likely you're most likely beyond caring
about money. There really ought to be some compelling uses for
money late in the game.

**Homeric spoilers ahead**

Well, it's a while since I read the odessey, but I guess you'd have to
set off on a boat, have your entire crew massacred by a variety of
hideous monsters, get shipwrecked on an island where you shack up with
a nymph for a few years before finally building a raft and sailing home
to your (very forgiving) wife and son who assist you in slaughtering a
load of unwanted house guests.
