So my priest was doing very well in this game, found the quest and the
castle easy enough, though a little boring from all the repetitive
combat. (I was wielding +4 Frostbane and it was actually taking me a
while to kill all those undead creatures.) Sorting through my stuff in
preparation for Gehennom, I realized I had a wand of polymorph, a =oPC,
and an amulet of unchanging, and decided to cut down on the monotony of
the mazes by doing Gehennom as a Xorn. I had spells of magic mapping
and detect treasure, so this would really mean I could zip through each
level. So I polyied in to a Xorn, and was a little disturbed to find
how low my HP were, even after boosted by a few potions of full
healing. On the other hand, I was delighted to see that I was now
getting four times as many attacks per turn as before. No more the
annoyance of long battles just to kill a wraith. Most everything went
down in two turns, and if necessary, it was easy to retreat through a
wall, taking off my shield, cast a healing spell, and come back
swinging.
Thus I reached Juiblex's swamp. Juiblex -- yeah, yeah -- down in two
turns. I was levitating my way across the swamp, HP at about 80, when
I saw a j next to me. Lazily, I swung at it. And, to my horrow, saw:
Your sword named Frostbrand hits the spotted jelly! --
You are splashed by the spotted jelly's acid! -- (HP changes to 60)
You hit the spotted jelly! --
You are splashed by the spotted jelly's acid! -- (40)
You bite the spotted jelly! --
You are splashed by the spotted jelly's acid! -- (15)
You bite the spotted jelly! --
You are splashed by the spotted jelly's acid! --
DYWYPI?
But, but, but...
If I had had only one attack per turn, it wouldn't have killed me!
Suddenly having four attacks per turn didn't look to be such a great
thing!
Well, play and learn. I didn't know j's could splash back once for
each hit, or I would've treated it with more respect (aka, avoided it
entirely, since there was no reason whatsoever to go after it).
