YASD My best char ever: Hill Orc Berserker

Cleared the orcish mines. No problem.
Then the Lair.
Then the snake pits. Found cool poison/magic resistance hat which made
the reast easy.
Then the swamp. Got hairy with multiple hydras/dragons.
Then the hive. Too easy if you have poison resistance. AC 37 probably
didn't hurt either.
Cleared Vault down to level 4. Things are looking fine and then:
Entered the Hall of Blades. I walked tentatively down the first few
hallways

Get hit by mace of distortion, blink.
Get hit by mace of distortion, blink.
Get hit by mace of distortion.
Bad Orc SMASH mace of distortion.
Whew, that was close... wait what?
Teleport into main room.
AIEEEE!

I ran around and used up all my scrolls, made it close to the exit. I
berserked on the final dash, out of
healing potions and panicked. I slow down, die feet from the stairs
out.
*sigh*

My furthest char ever, never got any runes before today even...
A good way to spend a vacation day. I have a plan to buy a cheap an old
projector and screen to put in the
main room to make it so the kids can enjoy the epic adventure I'm off
on..

Seems you and I are around the same point, we're both able to get a
ways with berserkers but my best guy got greased at the bottom of the
vault. I thought the guards were the end of my worries there. Turns
out there was worse waiting. I got through the Hall of Blades, but
ended up in the Abyss due to distortion weapons. I'm not sure the HoB
is worth it unless you're hurting for a weapon.

Flaming axes are nice.

> M - a +2,+1 dwarven morningstar of distortion //just found in hall of

But I dislike distortion weapons and won't bother picking them up.

> Armour

I like minotaurs, but the ability to wear helmets is a bonus for dwarf
and orcs.

> +b - a +2 crystal plate mail (worn)

Nice pull. I've yet to get anything great from aquirement. Got a
decent hat once, so maybe armor is a good way to go.

Your armor was great, but the cloak, shield, gloves, etc weren't so
great. If possible I would've invested some enchant armor scrolls on
those gloves.

Yeah, I really don't know. Digging and healing came in handy, and I've
heard of teleport wands but don't remember actually using one.
Lightning, fire etc are good for finishing off runaways, but I use a
bow.

> +y - a +4,+5 ring of slaying (right hand)

Very nice. That's the deal with these games, a bit of good luck early
on makes a big difference, so much so that I get discouraged if I
don't get lucky.

> z - an amulet of warding

What's this one do?

> P - a ring of protection from magic

I wonder if this would've helped against distortion.

> +S - an amulet of rage (around neck)
> //Does this help AT ALL for a natural berserker?
> //sadly, I never found a better amulet

Not that I know of, except I think it reduces the possibility of
passing out.

> T - an amulet of the gourmand

I know you said your food problems were over but I think this one is
pretty good.

> V - an amulet of controlled flight

And this one I guess can be good when combined with a ring of
levitation.

> Y - a cursed ring of teleportation

I found teleportation unreliable but semi-useful. Worth uncursing and
experimenting with in levels where you suspect there's unconnected
areas. Just be sure you're ready to go berserk when you get there. I
had YASD when I teleported in the lair with my bow equipped, landed in
a bunch of yaks and went berserk like an idiot so I couldn't switch
weapons.

You're one up on me, I only ever got the swamp one.

Well, not that I really know what I'm doing, but mace/flail dovetails
with axes and comes in handy if you find a nice blunt weapon or don't
get a flaming axe by the time hydras start showing up. I also like
bows, but that requires throwing as well, so I try to avoid shields.
Also, with minos experience goes into unarmed fighting. I really do
like minos. People recommend doors and traps, and you get that (I'm
guessing) by standing next to traps and pressing ctrl+dir when you
have some spare experience. I did run into a few nasty traps so it
probably does help a lot later on.

Unless you REALLY need a weapon, probably stay out of the Hall of Blades.

Rough. Just for future reference (it took me quite awhile to realize this, so
maybe you're unaware, too): reading a scroll of teleportation, or zapping
yourself w/ a wand (or whatever) while feeling "strangely unstable" will turn
you "strangely stable" again and abort the teleport.

> HP : -7/157

> MP : 15/ 15 Weapon +2,+6 hand axe (flame)

That's a pretty dinky weapon for late in the game. No broad axes? There had to
be a war axe, at least.

(and that's assuming you wanted a shield, which is fair; but executioners' axes
and battleaxes are probably better choice for an axe maniac.)

> Turns : 47670 Ring +4 ring of strength

Probably didn't need the ring of strength on at this point.

That's pretty nice.

I'm not totally sure, but I think you get considerably more bang for your buck
using enchant armour scrolls on shields than you do on armour; this probably
would've been worth getting to +2.

Probably at this point you could've dropped polymorph other, paralysis, and
maybe lightning and fireball (though fireball's nice for shooting fleeing
monsters in the back, since it never misses). None of cold or fire? They pack
more punch than lightning and fireball (unless you get a lot of bounces out of
the lightning).

> +S - an amulet of rage (around neck)

Li'l bit. Lowers your chances of passing out. But that would've been pretty
low, anyway.

No reason not to stash 'em.

I don't have much experience with berserkers, but Trog doesn't get mad about
Evocations. Might want to get that above spellcasting, then use ?acquirement to
get some rods.

I just wanted to add that I avoid throwing darts. I tried them, but
found throwing misc spears and daggers worked. They do clutter up
inventory, but by the time that's an issue I've moved onto bow and
arrow and the throwing skill dovetails with bow.

I disagree. If you're buff enough to handle the weapons or have a good
ranged attack it's a nice source of experience. The weapons resist
most spells, but I've found Iskendrun's mystic blast to be a nice way
of dealing with them. Otherwise you need a good weapon, high AC, good
HP, and a good measure of carefulness, but it's doable as a fighter.

I agree. Most of the non-attack wands are resisted by the monsters you
really need to use them on (ie paralysis and polymorph).

A high evocation skill is nice to have, so keep it turned on,
otherwise I think it looks good for a pure fighter. Maybe you should
train Traps & doors - not stumbling into Zot traps later on is worth
the experience.

Generally by the time you're that far, you either have a better weapon
than what's available there, or don't use weapons anyway. The
experience is really nice, though, as long as you can manage to avoid
being constantly drained -- dodging characters and "preemptive
destruction" characters seem to have it the easiest in that respect.
