---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A spriggan with a rod of destruction is a both a thing of beauty and
a joy forever. Worth only 250gp, huh? NOT TO ME! I found it nice and
early too, just lying around in the Hive. Unfortunately, it only had
Throw Flame, Firebolt and Fireball, but fire does take care of most
things, and it's great for crowd control. And with my sprigganly mana
reserves, I was throwing Firebolts around like Magic Darts. Like so
many ambitious crawlers, i was planning to be a master marksman of one
sort or another, but the rod put paid to those plans.
This is the first time I've ever made use of a staff of channeling.
It was quite handy. A convenient accessory for the rod, too. No
talismancer should be without one.
I was a bit sick of magic, so I really only used Blink, Sure Blade (a
personal fave,) Ozocubu's Armour and Deflect Missiles. That was
plenty. It's a shame Extension never works well in practice.
The quick blade was a NICE find, (Elven Halls.) I've never seen one
before. I've seen every other weapon I've ever heard of, plenty of
times. They must be extremely rare....?? For those who don't know,
it's a 5 base damage, +6 toHit weapon, but with a 70% attack rate.
Well worth the sacrifice in hurting-power. Especially when you've
got +15 in various damage bonuses. With that kind of speed, you can
have a few exploratory stabs on every monster before you make up your
mind how you're gonna play it, then maybe make another few stabs and
find out if your plan is as clever as you thought. And you can polish
off a baddy before his buddies step in. And if you get spotted by
someone while your busy assassinating his chum, you've still got time
to leg it. It's also nice to have an attack speed that matches your
movement speed. Oh, and you never get caught out impatiently pressing
the attack key too often and finding yourself suddenly, awfully dead.
:)
I couldn't've made it without that amulet, of course. Every wimpy
character needs their resistances. And having three shades of scales
was nice. Pulls the chicks.
I actually ended up with less Dex than I started with, (19.) With my
mastery of Evocations, and an unrepentant exploitation of the
levitation trick, I snapped up every deck of wonders I could find, and
I found a lot. (You get better stat improvements when you have a
higher Evocations skill. And levitation saves you from the Abyss and
other unfashionable destinations.) Unfortunately, I drew the card of
Shuffling early on, and got all my Dex transferred to Int and Strength!
Mostly Int! Ok, the Str came in handy, but I needed Int like I needed
a giant mace of orc slaying. I guess I used it later on with my
buffing spells, but I just don't think I got the mileage out of 25 Int.
At least it helped me feel superior to the riffraff I was killing.
"Sorry fellas. Lebensraum, you know." I had a lot of angst trying to
decide between the +0,+6 ring of slaying and a +5 Dex ring. Especially
when my Dex was at it's lowest ebb: 10. What would you guys have
chosen?
I found 1.5 truckloads of randarts of the unwearable and unwieldable
variety. It would be nice to have the occasional mini-armour,
mini-boots and mini-gloves for us vertically challenged characters.
Even if they were extremely rare, it would give us something to hope
for, and more incentive to go get ourselves killed somewhere in Hell
looking for them. Still, I can't complain. The items I found were all
a spriggan could want, really.
Sprigganz Rulz Foreva!

P.S. Yeah, I know an assassin/healer is a bit of a contradiction.
But come on. Those thief-oriented gods? Yeah right! No decent thief
has 50-odd HP to keep spare in case of a lightning bolt reward from
Xom. And Nemelex is SO MUCH EFFORT. And then after all the collecting
and sacrificing, you get killed using the decks cos you're too sick and
tired to care any more. That sort of thing's happened to me way too
many times. I only use low-maintenance gods these days. Which pretty
much limits me to Zin and Elyvilon. And I can't see the point in Zin.
I guess the Shining One is okaaaaaaay, if you're a meathead with plenty
of clanky armour.

Hey, has anyone ever got a rod from a scroll of acquirement?

As long as your Evocation skill is significantly higher than your magic
skills, wishing for "staff" yields a rod, IME.

Really??? Wow! That's invalubauble information! It's a great game
design idea. Makes it possible to devote any character to Evocations
like a class.

Oh. One last thing: This little guy had some great hidden innate
extras. Everyone knows spriggans are practically immune to magic, but
I also had terrific natural poison resistance. About the only way to
get poisoned was to eat something stupid. Once I had the amulet
though, I lost the chance to find out any more about just how far this
poison resistance would stretch. Anyone know?
Also, I always seemed to be able to see invisible. Very very handy.
Are these bugs, or innate sprigganly advantages?

It's three levels of resistance in the patch.

Spriggans see invisible innately. They are not, in my experience, poison
resistant, so that's just you being lucky. (Poison resistance is binary
anyway - you either have it, or you don't, unless you're playing with the
Imps, Draconians and Demons patch...)

Hello there Britto!

Because not everyone reads Usenet posts in a nested view, not everyone
archives past posts (I don't know why they wouldn't want to, but it's
apparent from what I've read that not everyone does), and memory does
not always serve, it's considered good form ("Netiquette") to quote at
least the minimum context needed for others who haven't been following a
thread intensely to understand the questions/comments one has. E.g. in
this case here, it might look like this:

"SC Skipsey wrote:

Is it a sliding scale in the patch?"

In the end everything worked out fine this time, but sometimes
contextless questions end up as pretty confusing... and unanswered.
(There are also those more curmudgeonly than me who state things like
the above in somewhat harsher terms; fortunately, none are around at the
moment.)

Cheers,

Erik
