Hi guys!,
I am helping my friend build himself a decent budget gaming computer. I haven't made a new build

in a couple years and have fell a little behind on the new prices/tech. I have put together a rough

Idea here and would like to see what you guys would change/add Some of my concerns here.

-Should it be an intel or amd build?

-Do you think an ssd is necessary

-im not to familiar with how this processor performs. But it seems to be popular in this budget. Should I look for aquad core instead?

Check out battlefield 1 minimum system requirements:

If he plans on playing games like that, you might want to talk him into saving more money.
Games coming out like this are just going to get more demanding when it comes to performance.
If your going budget, I'd hold of for amd's new am4 platform. Its coming out next month and you'll most likely get great performance per dollar.
Always go with Intel builds unless you're on a budget, or just wait for Ryzen CPUs cause they seem to be much better than any of their current CPUs. An SSD isn't necessary but its highly recommended for much faster boot times etc. I'd say quad core is the norm these days so it'd be best to get one. Aside from that seems good to me.

I do like that suggestion. Do you feel he will ever use over 8 gigs of ram on everyday use? If its reasonable to believe he may need 16 gigs I will definitely go that route.

Which quad core cpu would you recommend as a replacement? Is there a go to budget quad?

Yes as games work better with 16GB's today. Examples is CSGO runs better with 16GB's because you can load more of the map into memory.

What games is your friend interested in playing?

He likes first person shooters and racing games I believe. But a little bit of everything.

I feel like the above system with a quadcore cpu would be able to play battlefield 1 fine. wouldn't you think?

Yes, with BF1's recommended memory requirement of 16gb. That game utilizes more than 8gb of system memory.
