Yet Another Question Regarding Networks

My apologies for the second question, but my friend needed my help once again...

He is wondering if it were possible to use a separate router with a modem/router combo thing.

Would he be able to use the separate router without plugging the router into the modem/router combo?

I have read many mixed answers on many sites... And confused me.

His ISP is CenturyLink if that is needed.

What does he want to use the second router for? Better WIFI? If so then configuring it as an access point is the proper implementation. He may want to disable the WIFI on the combo unit.

Depending on the router, it may be easy or manual to configure it as an access point. But at a minimum you connect the ethernet cable to the LAN port on the second router and disable the DHCP server on that router.
