YOGA 700 vs YOGA 3 help a girl out :)

Hello! Can anybody please help me decide between these two laptops: one is YOGA 3, another is YOGA 700

SPECS:

Lenovo Yoga 700-14
Intel® Core i5-6200U (2,3Ghz), 8 GB DDR3, 500 GB HDD, 35,6 cm (14'') Full HD (1920×1080) IPS Multi-Touch, Intel HD Grafik 520 + SSD 120GB instead of DVD

I can not decide between the graphics and the new i5 or the older i7. Mostly I will be using it for design (adobe, blender), some light gaming (not the most graphically demanding), maybe for some video work too, and writing, but most of all it is supposed to be a normal-powerful transportable computer that can normally handle some multi tasking and it turns the programs and games on as quickly as possible.

Depends on what prices they are for. Also if you are comfortable with using an external hard drive, because 128GB is puny in 2016.

No I didn't, I checked but this one has the intel HD graphics, somehow
I have another, the yoga 500, that has NVIDIA GeForce920M 2GB and i5-6200U (2,8Ghz), 4 GB DDR3, and 240GB SSD. But as i know this one is in a different price range.
The price doesn't bother me that much, im just trying to stay under thousand haha
Oh at the external drive also doesn't bother me as i intend to use it the studio all the time aynway. And the disks are small, its alright

Well the Yoga 13 has a slightly better CPU but I'd take the Yoga 700 for its better GPU. Should help with gaming and the other stuff you do.

The Yoga 3 uses Intel HD 5500 which will play League of Legends, DOTA, and Minecraft without problems. Output is comparable to "1GB". The newer Intel HD 520 in the Yoga 700 is comparable to "almost 2GBs", so there will be a notable difference. The dual-core Skylake i5 will improve battery life, but may not be as fast as an i7, although I doubt you'll notice any difference. If you can get the Yoga 700 with an SSD, even if it's only 128GBs, it's going to make a world of a difference compared to a mechanical HDD.

I would get the Yoga 700-14 with the 6th generation Core i5-6200u and the Intel HD 520 graphics core.

While the Yoga 3 has a 5th generation Core i7-5500u, the performance difference vs the newer Core i5-6200u is actually pretty marginal. Plus the i5-6200u is also a little more power efficient which means a little better battery life. Assuming the Yoga 3 and Yoga 700 are the exact same laptop with only the CPU being different the Yoga 700 would probably has about 20 - 30 minutes more battery life.

The performance difference between the two CPUs is marginal because the i5-6200u has a 2.3GHz / 2.8GHz (Turbo Boost) clockspeed vs the i7-5500u which has a 2.4GHz / 3.0GHz (Turbo Boost) clockspeed. Taking into consideration that the average CPU performance is about 4%, then a 6th generation CPU running at 2.3GHz / 2.8GHz would be equivalent to a 5th generation CPU running at 2.39GHz / 2.91GHz (compare to the i7's 2.4GHz / 3.0GHz).

On the graphics core side of things. Intel has been steadily improving the performance of the Intel HD graphics with every new generation by around 15%, but actual performance depends on the application / game. That basically means the newer Intel HD 520 graphics core will perform 15% on average better than the older Intel HD 5500 graphics core.


If it makes any difference... a 5th generation Intel CPU can only support 16GB of RAM whereas a 6th generation Intel CPU can support up to 32GB RAM. 32GB of RAM is likely overkill for your needs, but that amount of RAM should allow you to use an extremely large amount of textures in Blender from what I understand of the program. If you use Adobe Photoshop, then having that much RAM means you can have several multi-layered TIFF files opened. However, keep in mind that 16GB DDR3L RAM sticks are pretty expensive at around $150 per stick.

Thank you very much! That was exactly the answer i was looking for! And yes the possibility for upgrading the RAM is quite important, so thanks for pointing that out. I later figured out that the 700 is anyway just the new 3, but with a totally different name, so yeah, the 700 it is.

The price is just 70€ more so I dont know. I just dont trust HP laptops because of the previous experience I had.

I had two HP laptops and their motherboard just died all of a sudden. The last one was a elitebook workstation and it got warmer and warmer after some time. I think they have a time clock set for only two years haha.

Which one of these two would you buy?

Well the nVidia 940mx is certainly going to help reduce render times in Blender compared to a laptop with only integrated graphics.

Whether or not the new laptop will give better / worse / same rendering time as the HP Elitebook... that depends on if your Elitebook has a dedicated graphics chip. If it does then getting the Yoga 700 could result in lower performance due to the lack of dedicated graphics to improve rendering times.
