Yorksfield - 680i or P35?

Right now I've decided to buy an E6750 and wait untill Yorksfield to buy a Quad-Core CPU.

Which chipset would be better for the 45nm Quad-Core Yorksfield, 680i SLi or P35 and in what ways?

in no way should you go for the p35 unless your money limited.

the 680i is a good chipset, but im leaning on the x38. although you havent listed it, im gonna tell you why its more worth it.

in the long run, like th 975x ( which is still pretty strong ) you will get support. and lots of it.

the x38 over the 680i is built for 45nm and quad cores while the 680i does support it, i imagine that the bios flash will incur more bugs.

unless you want sli or multi monitors, you wont need the 16x16x8. the x38 offers PCIe 2.0 and 16x16.

with the x38 you can expect top notch quality from manufacturers, and fancy onboard cooling etc.

also, if you must have sli, theres the new c73 and mcp 78D ( expecting nov.) that should support sli,45nm and all the rest of it.

now, why you shouldnt go for p35? because its intended as mainstream. you wont get all the features ( and thats fine as long as you dont need them) and you might not get the full 9 yards.

meanwhile you have the mature and feature packed 680i. now with that, i sugguest you look at gigabytes offering. also, the striker extreme. i tend to stray away from reference due to the fact that theyre quite bland.


and now i leave you with more $^!#T to think about.

It's got PCIe 2.0, SLi AND DDR2!

Only problem is it will be released in September, and I'm pretty sure thats after the end of summer vacation :lol:

looks/functionality/crossfire support/heatpipes/esata etc...

im pretty sure you meant 680i not the x38. Although intel is rumoured to have sli on its chipsets soon enough, i doubt it would be on the x38.

anyhow, look at the two asus i chose for you. theyre both ddr2 ( or if not, i meant for them to be since there are two versions)

As I'm not going to buy P965, I don't see how this is relevent.
 


Havn't you noticed that summer vacation ends in a single month?

I don't think I want P35 because it's lack of SLi.

But I'm not sure if I'll be able to reach my 500Mhz FSB goal on 680i SLi.

You need to read the article not scan it. If you can't see the benefit of the P35 over the 680i, then just get the 680i. If you want SLI, then the point is moot, get the 680i. Or, just get the 680i anyway. Best to wait for the X38. Supposedly it will have SLI and a lot more features, only time will tell.

500? you seem really confident.

id say if you want fsb speeds, a DFI board is due out later and is said to reach 600+ fsb soo youll want to look at that.

if not, the 680i is mature and wil get you to id say at least 400-450 ( with the striker as ive heard)
so, best case scenario, i myseelf woould go for the 680i.


 



Don't expect SLI to work on a non-Vnidia/SLI mobo without modded drivers. X38 is for CrossFire not SLI. If you intend to only get one GFX card then your ok.

Of course I want X38. If there was an X38 DDR2 board out right now, I'd buy it in a heart beat.

But there arent and by the time X38 is out summer vacation will have been long gone.
 
The P35 is the replacement for the P965 boards which are the known as bad a$$ overclockering and the mobo's that can get you past 500+FSB. On two different mobo (P5B D) I have hit 500 FSB on both, but if your processer doesn't like a high FSB (500+) then it don't matter what mobo you get. I have tried on two mobo to take my E6600 to 533 FSB and on both boards it just won't do it. It stops at the same place on both boards 525 FSB.

The P35 is an awesome mobo and very popular right now, the only reason to wait is PCI-Express 2.0.
